Sonic has a ring system in place so it is never a one hit kill (unless you are out of rings).
Ah shit, forgot about the rings. lol
Sonic's level design is also built around the fact that you're going to be moving fast. It's very possible to react to everything that flies at you when you're at top speed.
Plus Sonic's physics aren't horrible.
I know it was fun play, I even turned sega genesis stereo speakers on because it made the sega games sound so much cooler. I never played the snes version. I recall a western theme level further into game. never knew about egm at that time even though I remember seeing spiderman and batman comics at the super markets.
You took too long, now your candy's gone. That's What happens. Bkowwwww. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻)
I remember being pretty excited over the release back in the day. The promise of a fast-moving SNES platformer (it was before I had a Genesis too) was appealing. I didn't really hate it, but didn't think that much of it once I'd played it either. Not sure I bothered to play anything past the first one.
Because... it's a bad game? That's like saying why does everyone hate Marvel Nemesis. It's just a generally hated game, and for good reason. Most notable bad features are the zoomed in camera and slippery controls.

It's the equivalent to releasing a modern shooter today with unpolished game mechanics and calling it Yell of Service: Current Armed-Conflict.
Granted I never gave the series much of a chance after "Bubsy Kicks Dr. Machino's Butt."
That was Awesome Possum.
Wow, I'm sorry about that, you're right, they're so similarly bad I somehow molded both series together in my brain .
All of those "Animal Mascots with Attitude" blend together in my head. Bubsy, Awesome Possum, Gex, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Sparkster, Rocky Rodent, Punky Skunk, they're all cut from the same cloth.

Oh come on, Sparkster and his games are on a totally different level than 'animal mascot with attitude'. They deserve a bit more credit than that, surely?

Also, Bubsy has the gall to say, "What could possibly go wrong?" at the beginning of each level. The answer, Bubsy, is: "Everything...everything...<sobs>."
