Because Ultima Underworld did it first, and Arx Fatalis was originally intended to be a third game in the series.

I haven't played it in about ten years so I can't say if it has held up or not, but I remember loving Bloodwake when it was first released in 2002. It was pretty much Twisted Metal with boats haha.

Again, I never played the later Ultima games. So you're probably right, it probably was first. But I don't see how that means my comparisons were any less right. King's Field and Elder Scrolls are similar to Arx Fatalis in many ways, which is why I like it so much.sabrage wrote:Because Ultima Underworld did it first, and Arx Fatalis was originally intended to be a third game in the series.

I only corrected you because Arkane literally wanted to make an Ultima Underworld game with Arx Fatalis, they just couldn't secure the rights. The similarities to TES and King's Field spawn from the fact that they also drew in large part from the Underworld games, but while they might be a more current and recognizable parallel for the average gamer it doesn't really make sense to say that Arx Fatalis is "like King's Field" or "like Elder Scrolls". Especially the latter, because in my opinion the Elder Scrolls series is a large part of why we don't see more ambitious open-world RPGs these days.
Moreover, Arx Fatalis is one of my absolute favorite games. The amount of effort that Arkane put into recapturing the world and atmosphere of the UU games is astounding. Finding the planetarium in the castle and gazing out over the cold, dead world that you live in for the first time remains one of the most memorable moments I've ever seen in a game. I don't know how it survived the port to Xbox, but I think the PC version is phenomenal.

Did the PC version have music in the game? Because that's the one thing that bugs me about the game (which I have on XBox). Great sound effects, but no music. I think all games should have music, because it's supposed to be a visual and audio experience.sabrage wrote:I only corrected you because Arkane literally wanted to make an Ultima Underworld game with Arx Fatalis, they just couldn't secure the rights. I guess I never really thought about it... There's some weird ambient tones, but I don't think there's any real music to speak of. I think it's fitting: who's composing music in this dank, lonely world?
