Re: What has modern gaming done right?
One thing that's pretty impressive about this generation is the absolutely phenominal reforming of the action-adventure genre. And, by that I mean, Exploring, real-time combat, possible puzzle solving, bosses potentially with patterns and a strong single player narrative.
Over the last decade or so, it's been something of a lost art, or somehow mashed together with other genres, like fps or platformers.
So, it's really been nice to get these really top tier Action-Adventure games again. And they're some of the most polished games coming out too.

I agree. We just need an HD Legacy of Kain game and the action-adventure genre of this generation will be complete.

Why does everybody go off on this? You know that most computers can't run it? You have to have a monster of a rig by next years standards to handle Unreal 4. Hell, Unreal 3 is still toned down in the majority of areas it is used. If you think something like this could help the downfall of modern gaming, you make me laugh.
I'm personally happy with the larger variety and better quality of games we get. Thanks to our technology, we can bring much more realistic, or even further unrealistic experiences into the limelight.

I guess the assumption is that the next gen consoles from Microsoft and Sony, as well as the PC games of the future will be based on that platform? So if the Wii U isn't able to run it, it'll miss out on the ports those games.

Re: What has modern gaming done right?
I think it's a major misnomer to say, "this can't run on this console because PCs are like this" they're different environments. The overhead on PC is staggering. And we don't actually know what the Wii U can even do yet. Not to mention, from what I've seen from the Unreal 4 Engine, there doesn't seem to be much reason why next generation consoles wouldn't be able to run some form of it. The geometry is barely more complex than in UE3 (there has not been a major jump in geometry detail in quite some time). They mostly focused on the lighting engine and particles. Which is fine. But to argue that this thing you've never seen won't run on this platform you've never seen is outright ludicrous.
And if you're going off of what CEOs and PR people have said ... their job is to sell their product. Meaning, Unreal Engine 4 has to be the most powerful thing (seemingly) on the planet, or else it has no merit. Therefore, of course they're going to say, it won't run on consoles. But the reality is, they will have a version of the engine running on consoles and the only reason it might not now is that it's probably not even close to being finished or optimized.
Take technology news with a grain of salt. They're often lying, it's the only way to sell their product.

So you don't do any Android/iOS gaming? There's no physical option with those devices.

The Unreal Engine has always been widely by developers, and as a result some of the best games of this generation run off Unreal Engine 3. However, 3 is now a bit dated and 4 will be extremely impressive, and we can also assume widely used just like 3 is now. The Wii could not run Unreal Engine 3, and as a result it missed out on great third party games. Nintendo fans like myself don't want the Wii U missing out on any third party games, so they must be able to run Unreal Engine 4. One can also assume that this next gen of consoles will last a pretty darn long time, like 8-10 years, because of improved online capabilities. So, in the middle of the Wii U's lifespan Unreal Engine 4 will be a common thing and shouldn't be too hard to run on a standard gaming rig. However, for another five or so years after that point, the Wii U still won't be running Unreal Engine 4. That will screw Nintendo for the second half of the U's life, just like it screwed the Wii.

Also, just a big point I didn't mention here earlier, WII U NOT RUNNING UNREAL 4 IS UNCONFIRMED. We still don't know.

Oh yeah I know that. I just have my fingers crossed for June 5th, Nintendo's E3 event.
Re: What has modern gaming done right?
Being able to download game demos. That's really the only thing I really appreciate this gen.
