If you're really hankering for some more Duke, check out DN3D's expansion packs and mods if you haven't already. And there's also the first two Duke games, which play more like Metroid than the other games but are still fun.pankakes123 wrote:Why don't I just play Duke Nukem 3D? Simple, I already have.![]()
I guess if Forever comes nowhere close to 3D there really is no point in getting it then. Thanks for all the replies.

-Level design pales in comparison to the nearly 2 decade old originalWhat makes Duke Nukem Forever so bad?
-Can't run and shoot (fuck sprint buttons)
-You can only hold two weapons at a time (though a PC only patch supposedly addressed this... or was it ever released?)
-Iron sights aiming button
It comes off as a console based neo-fps trying to convince everyone it's old skool. Yeah, I went there.
Re: What makes Duke Nukem Forever so bad?
I'm so glad a few people around here enjoyed the game, as I did. I thought the intro / hotel stages sucked, but from the on it was a blast. Hell, the levels and game design in general felt pretty similar to stuff like Half-Life 2 and FEAR at times. The game was a decent length too. It destroys a large amount of FPS's out there on the market now, so it was totally unfairly slammed in my eyes. It's more than worth $5 or whatever.
Expecting DN3D-2 is setting up for some major disappointment. You think Doom 4 will really go back to the Doom 1-2 days or be that good? Yeah right.

Re: What makes Duke Nukem Forever so bad?
To be honest, the game felt like a fun throwback to me. It's not as simple as Quake or anything. It's more in vein of Duke 3D and Half-Life style FPS gameplay more than Call of Duty. You do a lot more than shoot enemies, and simply having an FPS game today that does that is refreshing.
Of course, you could just play the absolutely superior Half-Life series ... but I'd argue $20 is not a bad price for the game. Take it for what it is and not what you think it should be, and you're bound to have a good time. It's not like the game is broken or anything.
To note, I played it on PC and I've been playing FPS games for about 15 years, so I didn't start on GoldenEye and Halo and move on to Call of Duty 4 ... I could see why people whom only have that sort of background with FPS would want to absolutely lampoon this game. But, to be honest, I think that's pretty unfair.

And seriously, name modern FPS's that have BOSSES.
Yep, bet that's a huge list.
Definitely something I missed in FPS's. Come on Doom 4.

Do you even play modern FPSs? The vast majority of them have boss fights throughout and/or at the end of the game.Xeogred wrote:And seriously, name modern FPS's that have BOSSES.

Bunch of bad guys or helicopters and shit don't count.

Rage had like two. And no final boss, the most anticlimactic final stretch of an id game ever. Sure, there's boss battles around in some game. But these moments stuck out a lot in DNF, they were iconic, fun and versatile boss fights and there were so many it was amazing. Hadn't seen that many bosses since Quake 4, Prey, or something.
Re: What makes Duke Nukem Forever so bad?
There are bosses in the Resistance, Killzone, Halo, FEAR, Far Cry, Portal, Half Life, AvP, Metroid Prime, Deus Ex, etc. series. Just becasue they aren't in COD or Battlefield doesn't mean that Duke Nukem Forever is somehow unique or the only game with "throwback" elements.Xeogred wrote:Name em.dsheinem wrote:Do you even play modern FPSs? Re: What makes Duke Nukem Forever so bad?
Resistance is terrible. Killzone I've never played.
Far Cry I guess, not Far Cry 2.
FEAR 2 yeah, not bad.
Portal? Final bosses I guess...
Halo... are you serious? 343 Guilty Spark counts? Giant ships, shooting stuff in cores or whatever don't count for me...
Half-Life for sure, but HL2? Striders I guess?...
AvP was freaking awful. God why'd I beat that game.
Metroid Prime isn't an FPS.
Deus Ex HR... those were horrible boss fights and that's for another discussion. These games are better off without them.
It's not the same. These aren't giant deformed pigs with rocket launcher arms. DNF gave me a thrill whenever a boss popped up. It was totally old school in that regard with the frequent bosses that you just had to unload on.
Don't take me too seriously. Bye.

You've made at least 2 enemies with that statement.Xeogred wrote:Resistance is terrible.
In what way? It's first person and you shoot stuff. It's main focus is exploration, but it's still an FPS.Metroid Prime isn't an FPS.
Wasn't an argument about whether they were good. Just that games didn't have them.Deus Ex HR... those were horrible boss fights and that's for another discussion. These games are better off without them.

Intoxicated, tired, or just grumpy?Don't take me too seriously. Bye.
To add to the list. Wolfenstein and (I'm pretty sure) Serious Sam 3 have them. GoldenEye on the Wii had one at the end. Red Steel 2 has several.
Another thing. Story driven games don't really work with bosses. In rare instances they do (Wolfenstein, Doom) but in most modern story driven games they just don't fit (See Deus Ex HR)
Older. Not wiser.
