Rumor: A new PS2 in '08 for $99

KOF XI, which the KOF community have praised for being the most drastic change in the series, and being the best since '98. Problem is, despite it being out in Japan and Europe for eons now, it has been getting incremental delays right when launch draws near.

Trust me, it is NOT an easy game to find here, ive yet to see it in shops, so I better go to the internet I suppose :s

Wikipedia shows it coming out on November 13th.....in the year 2629. That's probably more accurate.

lol -- well if its any consolation, from my past experience, Amazon, for some reason ships some games before stores like Best Buy does. (Don't get me started on my frustration with Best Buy)

There are some attractive exclusives, but most are getting ported or sequelized.
I almost caved and bought the slim PS1 back in the day, but now I just emulate.

If I wasn't concerned about dying machines, I'd be more persuaded.

Sony happened. And it didn't affect sales. Microsoft noticed this, so then Microsoft happened...harder.

But yeah, I wouldn't buy a ps2 of any model for $130. Thats just outrageous. It really should be $80-100 now. The PSone dropped to $50 just a year after PS2 launched, I believe, so I'm not asking for too much here. I remember buying the PSone. It was fantastic until it stopped turning on. A sad day. It was a very good looking machine with a very simple internal structure.

Given that the PS3 initially played PS2 games worse than the PS2, it's not that surprising. On the up side it might be a firmware problem (that I guess isn't fixable on the PS2?).

Hell, I'd give a reasonable amount of money for a PS3 that simply played games, played PS2 and PS1 games as well, and to heck with all the other bells and whistles. Blu-Ray was another Betamax sized mistake by Sony, one which has doomed the PS3 in my opinion. I think Nintendo has it more correct, just build a simple, sleek, powerful machine that simply plays games and call it good. Now, if you could just get a Wii for normal retail price.....

Blu-Ray can still be very useful for games, since it has larger storage than DVDs. It saves us from having to switch out DVDs when they start making FFXIX...

Swapping discs is the least of my worries when it comes to a new console. In fact, throughout console history, more often than not, storage space limitations have forced developers to focus more on quality of content rather than quantity. Having more space tends to just encourage devs to just throw in filler material that is often so boring that it completely halts my progress in the game, and then I never finish it.

Of course this is not always the case. Metal Gear Solid used the space to give us a ton of voice acting, all of which was skippable if you are the impatient type. Panzer Dragoon Saga however was 4 discs, yet my average play-through time on that game was always around 13 hours. That game had no filler at all. It was just one fantastic, engaging ride. So I guess my statement above doesn't always apply.

Actually I agree with technological constraints forcing the devs to polish, but I would think that if they're putting effort into meeting the constraints of the system hardware, they're not going to ruin it with awful filler, and you know that Squenix will invariably put something together that exceeds 9GB, so it's nice to have the extra space.

I think business wise it makes sense for Sony as well, 20GB and 30GB games would be fairly hard to pirate. Obviously some would make it out, but it'd take a while to download and people likely wouldn't seed it after burning it to disc.

I was just watching some videos of Last Hope for Neo Geo AES/CD and it was absolutely beautiful what they were able to do with 14 year old hardware. Nintendo might be counting on not upgrading the graphics capabilities of the Wii that much leading to much better polish from developers for Wii games.

Squeenix can take it's FMVs and shove them up its ass. Without FMVs, most of these games could still fit on a DVD9. I see no reason why these companies still use this god damn dated form of story-telling, especially when the 360 and PS3 have the power to run these cutscenes nearly as well in realtime.
