I was reading an old (2005) magazine article about the Computer History Museum (http://www.computerhistory.org/) and read a sidebar note about the Classic Computer Collector's Code of Conduct that made me think of this thread and these kinds of manipulative practices that seem so pervasive in video game collecting.

• - I will do my damnest to find a home for any classic or unwanted computer.
  - I will return or destroy any personal or commercially sensitive data I find on a machine I acquire, and will keep it in the strictest confidence, should I find it necessary to view it.
  - I will aid users in the decomissioning of their machines, should they require assistance.
  - I will respect active software and publication copyrights.
  - I will, whenever possible, repair the computers in my collection and maintain them in working order, and will assist others in doing the same, to the best of my ability. I will actively encourage the repair, maintenance, and use of older computers, in preference to the irreversable alteration of machines and parts for non-computer applications.
  - I will actively promote the exchange of computers, parts, and information among collectors, and will refrain from hoarding multiple examples of any item.
  - I will actively promote ethical collecting.

Now, I don't know how seriously people who collect vintage computers actually take this but it's admirable that at least some notable collectors and historians adhere to it. Would be great to have something similar for video game collectors and enthusiasts. Maybe it should start here on RacketBoy.

Nintendoage has a strange situation where they have garnered a large number of new users over the recent time period, yet seem to be tightening their clique more than ever. I tried to create a decent presence on the site, but on no other forum have I experienced such hostility and brazen unfriendliness to new users who contribute relevant content. It's a shame, since they have neat events such as the "campout", but I fear this only strengthens the inner circle. I knew there was trouble when I saw one of the most rude and ignorant users on the site promoted to moderator.

You are absolutely correct, and that was one of the main draws for me. It was a place to discuss the collectable aspects of games. Topics such as variants, the original contents of game boxes, and so on. There is a lot of extremely interesting and useful information in the forums if you care to browse years worth of threads in the "collector's corner".

I tried to discuss more of the playing aspect of the games. I created several threads talking about my recent experiences with re-playing NES and SNES games. I couldn't believe when I saw forum regulars literally telling me that my posts were a nuisance and unwanted. I had an equal number saying my posts were fine and encouraging me, but it was the first time I had seen a video gaming forum condone the scaring off of newcomers who were providing relevant content.

It's almost like they would prefer to just close off registrations and chatter amongst themselves.

Definitely. I created an account there recently to sell stuff, and didn't really see much worth participating in otherwise. I wonder how many of them actually play games.

I'm biased of course (this is my main forum), but I think Racketboy has the perfect equilibrium of old users who know each other and room for new users. Those of us who have been here for years have no trouble getting lost in a sea of fresh fish, yet a newb who has something meaningful to contribute can quickly become a familiar face. Just look at how many of our regulars have 2011 registration dates.

Adding my two cents...

I think that nintendoage is a great resource for NES collectors. The information regarding rarity and variants is unrivaled. That said, I would never actually post there. Nearly half of the users avatars - and many of the posts - reflect a very juvenile (i.e., misogynist) attitude towards sex and women that I find offensive. Racketboy, in contract, is an extremely mature and welcoming community where I feel that I can have "adult" conversations on topics related to video gaming. (Also, that little wizard guy on the left side of the page is incredibly annoying.)
