Would it be viable if someone released a digital only system, where AAA titles are $30 - $40, and the prices go all the way down to $.99? Non AAA games are $20 - 30?

That's kind of the direction things seem to be going anyways.

Now see, that is a system I would not buy.

This whole "the 8th gen won't work with used games" thing is crazy. It was rumored over a year ago, and now it's back. I haven't seen any evidence of it actually becoming a reality. It would be near suicide as it would eliminate rentals and borrowing games. And of course the fact that the used games industry isn't as bad to the game companies as they like to say (or maybe they actually believe it?)

You seriously believe that eliminating rentals and borrowing of games would be near suicide?

It will piss some people off, but PC, Steam, and IOS have been doing it successfully...

The biggest thing it will do is make our used games near worthless from a collectors standpoint. So owning physical copies will be pointless as discs/cards will just be a 1-time use that transfers the game files over.

Steam proves that the download only model works. I hate to say it, but external media is increasingly becoming a thing of the past. 20 years from now, there may well be no need whatsoever for games to be put on disc. Think about it. These companies want your money. Why give the money to a middle man when the publisher can deliver the game directly to you? And the great part is, you don't need to go outside, and they don't need to spend the money manufacturing the discs, cases, artwork, and all that jazz.
Our grandchildren are going to look at our collections, and say "You mean video games used to be stored outside the system? Why?"

You heard it here first.
Now back to my time machine.

I think that console makers will have to be happy with a smaller market then. Instead of selling 100 million consoles they will have to be happy with selling 20 million. I know of at least 5 different families that would lump themselves into the casual gamer. Most own a Wii, but probably buy 3 - 5 titles and rarely play or even beat those games. Those people i doubt will be jumping on the new console wagon. Probably just stick with the Ipad/Kindle fire or Iphone etc etc..

I'm not really excited about new generation gaming in general. I prefer old school (6th generation and before) better since I think old school is less complicated.
