Beat-Em-Ups, the dudebro games of the pre-3D world?

I don't know why everyone is so shocked by the "dudebro" title, it's just a little more retarded version of "brogamer", and I've heard that thrown around a freaking tonne over the last couple of years. They're a pretty new phenomenon, they're the "cool" people that got in to games recently as they've gained more and more mainstream appeal.

They pop collars, call each other bro incessantly (or bitch if they're girls- I will NEVER understand how "bitch" became a term of endearment) and only play Halo, Call of Duty and sports games.

Obviously, this is a huuuge generalization. But I like it, it tends to hold pretty true.

And Gears of War. It's the first thing that comes to mind when I think of dudebros.

Exactly my point. "Brogamers" should never be applied to retro gaming. Hence why this thread makes no sense and is laughable. Keep the brogamer term where it belongs.

That being said, I know a lot of people who are currently brogamers who talk about how much they loved Sonic the Hedgehog back in the day, but if you try to ask them about anything else for the genesis other than sports games they give you a blank stare.

Except that platformers tended to be varied, single player experiences, and the overall quality was much higher than (beat'em up) ones.

Plenty of crappy platformers. I'm not big on Genesis history, but for every Skyblazer you would see Captain Novolin. For every Aladdin, there was Cliffhanger. You see Lethal Enforcers, I see Revolution X.

I mean, if any game is successful, there will always be knock-offs and half-ass attempts. Remember what happened after Street Fighter II took off? You probably don't because a lot of those games were forgettable.

Not really sure what makes a game a "dudebro" game. I could list shoot'em ups, sports titles (racing/wrestling included), puzzle games (remember 4P NewTetris?) as all being highly derisive, encouraging multi-player, and filled with wave after wave of same... but they were still entertaining.

Things rarely tend to stay self-contained. I mean, look at Internet-trolling. People now troll in real life. And will call it trolling.

Paris Hilton's reality TV show. The first ones, where she kept calling her sidekick Nichole Ritchie "bitch" as a term of endearment. ("Goodnight, bitch!") Then the media and newschannels picked up on it. Then people mimicked in in real life. That got it mimicked in other TV shows or movies. ("Hug it out bitches!")

And an insult has suddenly been reversed. (Although people still use it as an insult as well. Strange.)

Also, in relation to dudebro/brodude, that may indeed be a modern thing. There was surfer lingo in the 90s (dude-duuude-duuUude, but that died out around 2000.
