Quick question:
How do you feel about cinder blocks?

It's the tried and true college dorm solution. They're cheap; they're easy to make; and they require no real skills or tools. Just take care not to scratch up your CD cases. I found that a sheet of paper on either side of the block prevents this problem.

Actually, there's a construction site right up the street from my dorm (they're rebuilding an old one), but it's somewhat well guarded (and I'm scared of the two police departments, sheriffs, and state troopers patrolling Boone). Plus I'm really anal about the way my collection looks as much as I am about what it contains, so I'm really not digging the cinder blocks...but I won't rule it out as an option if I find myself with an unexpected need for additional shelving.

I have a cinder block shelf holding my stuff right now. They are about a foot and a half apart, with a board over the top. My Saturn sits on the floor between the blocks, and my Genesis/SCD and Gamecube are on the board. I'm thinking about lining the holes in the blocks and using them as mini shelves.
