The one I have is not rubber coated, but it is the same idea as the gamecube joystick. Again, I stress that I have no idea how many different variations there are out there, nor do I know the extent of the quality of each one.
Wow those Hori Mini Pads look awesome, but what a price!! I would probably be willing to pay $25 bucks for 1 of those but not $50 used! Anybody here have or used those and if so what did you think of it compared to the N64 original controller?

Ziggy mentioned that he wasn't crazy about the button placement. That would probably be my biggest issue as well. For me, the controls in games like Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask just feel so perfect when using an original controller.
I use the HORI mini's exclusively (as do my kids as the others are much too big for them). It truly feels like a wavebird: size, weight, and thumbstick. Well worth the investment. Never had a problem with button placement. It takes getting used to, just like the first time playing Zelda OoT on GCN after being used the N64 layout, but it becomes second nature like anything else.
I've been using 3-In-One with success, most people use lithium grease. The first thread that I linked, you can read the conversation about it there. Specifically, it starts with this post: http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 11#p545911 (conversation continues on the following page).
Thanks. Very good info. I have some 3-in-One in the garage. I have three of four controllers with good tight sticks and I want to keep them that way. The fourth one might be too loose. You can actually see the plastic dust on the outside of the controller.
Apparently there is a new aftermarket thumbstick replacement hitting the market other than the gamecube-like one most of us are familiar with by now. It is more like the original analog stick in look and function. Very exciting!
Fox got one of the hori controllers thanks mjmjr25 for recommending it to him.
I don't use my good color matching controllers to play. I have some ghetto ones i use
they look crappy but have great sticks.
