Just download modmii from gbatemp.net and run it. It'll download everything you need and generates a readme with instructions. Can't get any simpler than that. Really!

It says that when you run the d2x7 installer on your Wii? I can't find a single thing about that installer asking for that wad for "offline mode". I can find that wad in various things but without knowing what is going on I'm hesitant.

The modmii might be a good option here just to see what it asks you and what you get.

Well, if I remember correctly, that was what I started with, then it said I had to use letterbomb or whatever because my wii is a 4.3. I'll start over and see what happens.

Ok let me just see if I have this all correct to get on the right path to a fix (hopefully)

You tried to run ModMii to softmod your Wii but it said to use LetterBomb

So you ran letterbomb like this guide says and got your wii soft modded

Then you tried to run the d2x7-final installer linked in this guide and it asked you to install the wad file because you were in offline mode

Correct?

Thanks for the guide, KDub. I really have to get an external and get this set up on my Wii.
My disc drive is a clickity clackity stuttering mess  (could a failing disc drive eventually cause problems ripping games to the HDD with the Wii? is there a lot of strain put on the disc drive during ripping? would I be better off just downloading scrubbed versions of the games I own?)

found this compatibility list that may be of some use:
http://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/USB_Device ... ility_List

anyone with this set up that could recommend a specific external HDD model?
the most popular one on that list seems to be the 1TB WD MyBook Essential Edition but I think I would prefer a USB powered HDD.
Is there any performance advantage to a wall powered HDD? (no spin down, etc?)
and what about transfer rates? is there a noticeable difference in 2.0 and 3.0?
(sorry for the noobish questions. thanks for the advice.)

Sounds accurate. I got to this part....
KDub wrote: Ok, insert the SD card back into the Wii and and go to the homebrew channel. Click on the d2x Ios Installer and lets begin that. You should be running ios58 and it will select that for you. You will now begin to select each numbered slot and install into the proper base. Make sure you have d2x-V7-final selected for each install

Follow this chart in order!
version: d2x-v7-final
base: 37
slot: 245
Press A and wait for it to complete, then select the select the next slot, press A again to continue.
Filled in the proper stuff, hit "A" and then it gives me the error saying I need the file. Then it says it's downloadable with something or another, I tried looking it up and found nothing.

The Wii only provides 2.0 speeds I believe so stick to that. Wall power has some advantages in keeping less strain off the drive and the connections in general and such so your drive could in the long run last longer. You won't need a 1TB drive unless you have a ALOT of games. Most of the these Wii games don't actually get to the 4.7GB dvd size the are pressed on once you scrub them down. I have a 150GB drive from an old laptop in a usb case and it works great, and I could pretty easily get 30 games out of it and probably a lot closer to 50+.

If you're really worried about your drive you could download the images but when ripping them it doesn't seem like the drive is working too hard/extra hard. In fact it is essentially making one long run around the disk so it is probably easier on the drive then it jumping around reading the game.

EDIT: Never mind got you covered in my next post!

I can't find anything about d2x7 and this wad file. I'll keep looking though and it might be a good idea for you to make a thread another forum that deals with wii modding specifically. I did a search for the wad specifically and got a google search return though.

For now maybe just move on and look into getting some of the other cool homebrew, emulators and do a NAND back up before you anything with this d2x7 and wad file again.

OK! I think I found your solution harper!

Go here http://www.mediafire.com/?b91uv7gich1bbgl

Download that and unzip all the WAD files to the root of your Wii SD card. After that you put the SD card back in and go to the homebrew channel then run the installer like before and follow the original instructions.

These WAD files (which it was asking for) are all the bases in that are listed in the op that you are installing the cIOS files too.

I grabbed these from here http://www.wiihacks.com/other-faq-guide ... guide.html
The version numbers (such as V5662 for the 36 base wad you were looking for) match up and are all the bases I have listed so I'm pretty sure this is what you need.

Again I stress to back up your NAND before doing this though since I haven't tried it myself I can't be 100% sure.

If you're going to use ModMii, you need to follow the instructions that are in the README it generates. You can't be using part of the README and then part of it from some other website, etc unless you know what you're doing.

Powering a drive from USB does not strain a drive. Either the USB port provides sufficient power or it doesn't. Personally, I like the convenience of a USB powered drive since my Wii is in a media center cabinet with the power on the bottom rack but the wii is in the middle rack. It's a pain to have to disconnect the power plug and snake it between the shelves.
