PSone version also has a playable audio track on the actual CD - something all other versions don't have..
..if you're into that kind of thing.

The Saturn version did not have that? Weird. That was usually a Saturn quirk.Rurouni_Fencer wrote:PSone version also has a playable audio track on the actual CD - something all other versions don't have..

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Isn't all of the Castlevania games these days released on portable consoles? Is it really that big of a deal that you would have to play SOTN on the PSP as opposed to looking at your television?
I've only played the PSX version, but I'd have to say the argument for the PSP version being better seems better; less trivial points.(no offense guys

1. There was nothing classic about the original voice dub. It was crap. The only people who liked it just liked it because of how laughable it was. That's not a good thing. Also, japanese voice option automatically makes the PSP version better. It makes the english dub a moot pointBreetai wrote:"Bastardized", "bugs" and "too easy." Okay, you are right. They were generalizations.Gamerforlife wrote:Actually, she didn't, and neither have you. What's so bad about the PSP version? All she did is point some minor differences but nothing at all that would lead one to believe that the PSP is, as she put it, "bastardized"
My post pointed out how many nice additions and improvements the PSP version has
I know I'm being a bit argumentative, but I am a big fan of SOTN and I firmly believe that the PSP version is definitive and I've listed all the reasons why
So, here are a few things I don't like in the PSP version.
-The new voice acting. I understand that is a matter of taste. Still, some of the most classic lines that SotN is known for have been changed. How is that definitive?
-It is an unlockable in another game. You cannot just buy this and play it. You must play though a bastardized (haha) version of Rondo of Blood in order to unlock SotN. Then, to play it later, you have to load Rondo and then SotN. I'd rather just download the PSN version and load up ONE game if I want SotN on my PSP. Not only that, but it's on a portable console. To play on a TV, you have to make sure your PSP is a version that has component output. You have to buy the cable. Make sure you are using a new enough TV to support it (plenty of people play their games on old CRTs with no component!), and then play it on the PSP instead of using a regular controller. Yes, you can plug in a PS3 controller to the PSP, but that is just another step in an already growing number of steps to play an unlockable portable game on your TV. How on earth can anyone consider that to be a definitive version of a game?
-The ending song was changed. Why? How does that make it the definitive version?
-The two useless familiars from the Saturn version were added. Who actually uses these?
Of course, in the end, SotN is still SotN. It's all fun.
2. Please, it doesn't take very long to boot up SOTN on the PSP version and play it. You're just reaching for anything to back up your argument. As for the tv thing versus portable thing, you can go either way with that argument. I don't really care if I'm playing SOTN on a tv or a portable. Frankly, having a portable version is a luxury that beats out the luxury of playing it on a tv for me personally. I can play the PSP version of SOTN anywhere, any time. That's a bonus, and it looks great on the PSP screen where it was intended to be seen. Plus, the PSP screen is quite large, especially compared to the Nintendo DS. I don't have any problem enjoying anything on that large, widescreen. Everything looks nice and has plenty of room to breathe
3. The original ending song sucked, that's why they took it out of the Xbox Live version as well. It's an improvement
4. Regardless of if you use the familiars or not, it's content that wasn't in the original PS 1 version. If we're talking definitive, amount of content is always a factor. Most definitive versions of games, or anything else for that matter, have extra content

Or perhaps a cesspit of hate and lies?
Sorry to bump this, but I completed the remake of Rondo, and also the original on PC-Engine recently and I'm wondering what to do about SotN.
I think I will similarly play 2 versions of SotN now, but I don't think I will have stamina to play through 3 versions... I was thinking of going for Saturn's version either sort of simultaneously or *after* running through one of the English versions.
Currently I'm leaning toward the PSP version of it (given that I already have it and it is unlocked), mostly because it will be nice to have another version of Maria. And it is on a handheld. And I probably will prefer to have it on Japanese with subtitles and it seems the PSP version allows this?
I can look up the funny original English dub on youtube later as well (I already saw the classic Prologue - it is indeed funny). That is I think the main advantage the PS1 version has.
Does anyone really see a major flaw in this strategy? Would it be best to run PS1 + Saturn, or even PS1+PSP version and why?
Ivo.

I read that things such as this were taken out of the XBox Live version because the game was too large for XBox Live Arcade.Gamerforlife wrote: 3. The original ending song sucked, that's why they took it out of the Xbox Live version as well. It's an improvement

Re: Is PSX Symphony of the Night still the definitive versio
I was planning on getting the PSP version since it's so much cheaper than getting SOTN and Rondo, but now that I bought myself a NTSC PS1 I can get SOTN for a humane price (the PAL version is about 6-7 times more expensive than the US version) so I might not get it after all. How's the PSP version of Rondo? I prefer to play games on original hardware and I want to experience the awful voice acting of original SOTN, but I'm not sure if Rondo is worth the extra cash given how expensive the PC Engine version is.

If you REALLY want to play the original, emulation is always an option. It would be more accurate than a botched port (generally speaking) is the way I see it. That said I heard the PSP port is pretty good... however the original game is an unlockable after you beat the "enhanced graphics" version(!) Don't forget the game is on the virtual console on the Wii. It's also possible the PSP version is emulated in of itself, though I haven't looked into it to actually know.Menegrothx wrote:I prefer to play games on original hardware and I want to experience the awful voice acting of original SOTN, but I'm not sure if Rondo is worth the extra cash given how expensive the PC Engine version is.
Side question to major Symphony of the Night fans: I have the US version for the Playstation; is the Japanese version too easy? All I know is that the Jap is the original, obviously. I know that some localization choices that interfere with gameplay (and it's design) can really mess up the original integrity of a game. Not considering the Saturn or PSP or XBLA versions, just the Playstation 1 versions.
