Possibly go with a hybrid modern/retro style? Detailed backgrounds with relatively simple sprites and "platforms". It would also help eliminate any visual confusion with the backgrounds that some games have.
Help with background and whatever art you can contribute would be awesome. Let me know if you have the free time to help and I can PM you more details in the coming days. Different kinds of backgrounds/art I would be looking for help with.

A hybrid modern retro style could work. I'm not very good at making backgrounds so that's something that would really help me out. Do you have any previous work you could show me?
Did you say you were aiming at a 16-bit style game? 8-bit music is really easy to do in midi because of the tones you get to use. But with 16-bit you gotta be careful, it still has to sound retro and not "too good" if you know what I mean.
Yeah, 16-bit looking. I'm starting to think about being a bit more lenient about it (doesn't have too look like it's actually playing on Genesis hardware or anything), but you know, just a game that's clearly meant to look, play, and sound retro.

And yeah don't want anything too happy haha, think along the lines of that one song I liked a few posts back (not Forces, the creepy sounding one). So Castlevania/Ninja Gaiden upbeat-ish BGM with a hint of ominous vibes is what I'm thinking.

edit: This song captures part of the feel I want to capture as well. Just a matter of capturing the mood and converting it to old school side scroller BGM.

Thanks for the replies guys, I'm pretty set on making this happen.

I can gets you some BGMs thru midi,I have the ultimate electronic music studio.
Would you be able to do anything if I burnt you a cd?
If you can see the future while remembering the past, you may just have control of the present.

I used to edit sprites when I was a member of the Sprites-Inc forum. Perhaps I can edit some Castlevania sprites for you?

This probably isn't what you're looking for, but I spit these out today anyway. The first one probably needs to be simplified and I know you mentioned you weren't planning to do it, but the second could be used as a 'movie' still.

Woah. PM'd on that one.

I'm going to start compiling some basic information to PM to everyone that has expressed interest thus far this week on level design, gameplay ideas, what kind of artwork we need, etc. I think I'm going to drop the "everything has to be 16-bit" thing and go for a modern retro feel after all. Will make things a lot easier and will probably look better in the long run anyway. Thanks all.

Cool!

I realized at work today, that "happy" song that I wrote, I can probably change the key signature and make it work that way. I was also thinking up another song, I'll have to try and compose it before it leaves my head.

Moving along slowly but surely. I've saved quite a few reference pics. Got a couple walking sprites done. Think I still have to do the still in between. Is this what you had in mind? Does he look all right? I looked at a few sprite sheets online, mostly a lot of Castlevania since that's sort of the style you mentioned you were going for. But I don't want him to look like those sprites. I've never really liked the way Konami made those early various characters move. Looks like they're trudging through mud. Guts never struck me as a trudger. He's usually pretty calm and confident when he's off to slay something.

I was thinking a light jog for his walking animiation. Kind of like Alucard in SOTN but not so floaty. That looks pretty good so far. See if you can't get his cape to move around a little bit (doesn't have to be anything super detailed, just a few frames of movement).

For his attack I'm thinking either just one downwards swing with both hands, or a little combo type attack where he does a few attacks. I'm thinking of following Castlevania rules, and having most enemies die in one hit, but you can get interrupted by any attack and fall back.

This kind of goes along with what you said back on page one asking about this, but perhaps you could have powerups (like how the whips get stronger in CV), that give Guts some more combo/attacks? And they drop if you get hit. Might not be a bad idea, more work though as you said.

Awesome sprites Michi.
