Yet the cheaper Neo Geo CD has s-video and stereo out built right into the system. Go figure...
You can see why some people mod the AES. Yet, isn't it awesome to own one now? You own a freaking Neo Geo! YEAH!!!
I prefer the NGCD control pads. They do work fine with the AES. I'm one of those weird guys who prefers control pads over sticks.

The first thing I noticed when opening the box and actually touching everything (my first time lol) I was immediately taken back by the build quality, everything feels so light and plasticy...Kind of like how a Sega genesis feels, kind of hollow or something. Compared to the FZ-1 3do i had for a while which very much surprised me in how nice it felt and how weighty it was.
Only ever seeing controllers on the internet, I thought these were going to feel awesome, but they are very light and cheap feeling. They feel worse than any other arcade stick I have lying around (and i have a lot). The stick feels ok, but the buttons leave something to be desired.
Oh, you must be young, haha. That is top quality stuff for the year it was made!
Anyway, welcome to the club!

I concur. The first time I ever saw an AES was the day it arrived in my mailbox and I felt the same way. The console and controllers feel so fragile, I feel like I have to be extra cautious when moving/using them. And the mono audio was a disappointment.

Likewise, glad I'm not the only one. I need to hunt one down finally.
You can find really inexpensive titles online. When I first got my AES (same seller), I also won auctions for Magician Lord (complete) for $18 and Samurai Shodown (no manual) for $15.

While yes I am relatively young, that doesnt change the fact that the console seems to have some short comings considering its price at the time. This is the only console I own that only does mono audio, that seems to be a pretty large omission. Also the way the console and controllers feel has no bearing on my age, compared to other hardware from its time it certainly doesnt feel like it justified the cost. I understand that its whats inside that counts here, but I was expecting a bit more from the overall quality.
The buttons on the controller are also a but of a let down, can anyone confirm if they are microswitched or if they are on a PCB? I dont want to take one apart to find out myself.
I don't disagree with you, I was just being a smartass. The AES does feel a bit 'cheap', but the feeling of owning one cancels it out (for me at least).
Hori makes an AES controller. Its quality and feel is identical to the Hori Saturn stick. If you have tried and liked the Hori Saturn stick, try to locate a Hori AES stick. It has a much more sturdy feel to it.
So can you guys tell me what a realistic value is on what I have here? I know I just got it but am thinking of selling it to get an arcade cab, possibly a multi slot Neo Geo. I figure I most likely will never be able to spend the money to get some good games for it and think I would much prefer a cab in my house.
Looking on eBay there isn't a single one being sold within the us, they are all from japan. Also if anyone wants to talk here about a deal pm me.

That box looks like it's in excellent shape. The system originally came with nam 75, baseball stars, or mag lord. There might even by a UPC sticker on the side of the box that told you what game was inside. Buy a magician lord with case and manual ($30) and you've got a gold system with a wonderful looking box. If you put the pack-in game in the bundle, I'd bet you could get almost $400. Maybe more, depending on whether you've got 2 crazy f*cks on ebay in a bidding war. I'd bet you'd get people asking you to just sell the box.
As for bowling- does it have the manual? In good shape? You're approaching $100 on ebay with that guy if it's complete and in good shape..... I don't get it either.

Haha.. the US system is actually a little more hefty than the JPN (i've heard due to more shielding?)
And it's not fair to compare it with the 3DO. It's got an optical drive in it for crying out loud.
I personally like the sticks. Then again, I'm stuck in nostalgiaville, and this was the coolest piece of hardware you'd ever get. If you really want to upgrade, you can get this "homebrew" stick from MAS. My only complaint is that the A button is too far from B,C,D
