Stopped taking it serious after I saw Yoshi's Island. That game alone is worth a purchase just for the Map Music.

I find it quite easy to understand. Melee was the first cometitive game in the series and grew to be one of the most popular fighters in the scene.

By the time the sequel was coming the game was not too lively and the metagame had gotten stale. Brawl brought change and the "pros" hated the changes because they would need to adapt, specially since some of the top tier characters were not good in Brawl.

But the main reason is that the game was not as "pro" because it removed a big execution barrier.

Examples of being "dumbed down" according to the pros included not needing to push an extra button to cancel a move, removal of combos, removal of a glitch that simply made all characters a bit faster if you smashed buttons and so on. You can find a post by mew2king, a "pro" melee player complaining about this quite easily and since he is a respected member of the community the ideology spreads.

Add to the mix that the Smash community is well known for being incredibly inmature and you get a lot of hate.

This is not a troll, but I have seriously never seen the appeal of Yoshi's Island.

Well, I love the graphics. They look insane through s-video.

The gameplay is great too. The levels aren't linear at all, which was a welcome change to me. I also enjoyed the challenge of collecting everything in a level.

I think it gets some hate due to it being an odd sequel to SMW, but as a stand-alone game I think its superb. I much perfer this to Yoshi Story.

Yoshi's Island both perfected and heightened a long-running and tired genre. The control is excellent, the levels non-linear and the collection challenging. The difficulty rises on an appreciable yet manageable curve, and it takes a mastery of the game to collect everything and open all the extra levels. I can't think of many 2D platformers that come anywhere close to matching Yoshi's Island.

...but not the DS game. The DS game is crap. :|

What's up with the DS game? I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but it's on my list.

I own it. The main issue is that it's just kinda... boring, or something. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's missing something the first game had.
