How is the original Xbox shaping?
Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
Halo and Splinter Cell were really popular amongs bro gamers.

It was popular in the US but not much elsewhere.

And even in the US, it seemed most popular amongst the fratboy gamers of 5-10 years ago, who are now adults and not huge gamers anymore. That helped to erode the fanbase.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:It was popular in the US but not much elsewhere.

I don't know about that. I think they all got 360s. Every person I knew with the original xbox now has the 360. Many of them also have the Wii.BoringSupreez wrote: And even in the US, it seemed most popular amongst the fratboy gamers of 5-10 years ago, who are now adults and not huge gamers anymore. Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
Mine has new life to it since I modded it! I'd say I play it just as much as my 360 now.
I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

I was never fratboy. But I was about that age, now that you mention it. I graduated in 2001. And I sure as hell am not a "bro". I'm a freaking geek. And I loved Halo because it was so sci-fi.gtmtnbiker wrote:I don't know about that. I think they all got 360s. Every person I knew with the original xbox now has the 360. Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
The original Xbox was definitely my system of choice that generation.
It had the best audio visual experience and, for the most part, the best versions of multi-platform releases.
I admit that some of the best games (like KOTOR 1 & 2, the Rainbow Six series, Morrowind, etc) were also available on PC (and probably looked better there), but I find it much more pleasant (and easier on my carpal tunnel) to play them on my couch with controller in hand instead of on a PC with a mouse & keyboard.
I particularly like the multi-player games. Not only do you have the same-screen co-op titles like Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and Dungeon & Dragons: Heroes, but you have a ton of FPS games with LAN support, like Rainbow Six, Ghost Recon, Brute Force, Operation Desert Storm, etc. My friends and I have spent ridiculous amounts of time playing those at my house.
One thing that probably hurts its collectability, though, is lack of JRPGs. Those type of games always seem to be the among the most collectable titles for any system, and there were darn few of them for the Xbox.

Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
The thread makes me sad. The oXbox was amazing. Like others have said, it is in that awkward old but not retro cool phase (after all it is still only one generation old right now). It will pickup in collectability in a few years. It won't ever reach the heights of Nintendo collectability but it will still be desirable enough for the price of the best games to rise a few dollars.
The thing that would have kept the oXbox relavent today is if somehow the Xbox Live service would have stayed online. I guarantee people would still be playing Halo 2, Crimson Skies, Conker L&R, Battlefront 2, and a few others. I know I would...

Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
I have contemplated buying four xboxs, mounting two each into these spare cases I have, softmodding them and swapping out the harddrives, then installing all the great multiplayer games that would work best on multiple xboxs. I think this EVERY time I go to the Goodwill Computer Center or see two at a thirftstore. Whats stopping me is that for the amount of work and money it will take, it will get used very little. When we have a gaming event at my house, everyone wants to play Pacman Vs, Saturn Bomberman, or pc games.
I really enjoy Halo 1, more than even Reach, but like others have said, most of the games have been eclipsed by more recent titles. Heck even Halo 1 got a facelift, I still prefer the original though. Even though I love the Crimson Skies mythos and world, Dogfighter on the PC is a better game - its the same reason why we stopped playing Propeller Arena.
So the game list I came up with for four Xboxs was:
Halo 1
Halo 2
Mech Assault 1
Mech Assault 2
Steel Battalion
Ghost Recon
Serious Sam 1&2
Conker
Burnout 3
Brute Force
Crimson Skies
Need For Speed
Star Wars Battlefront 2
Rainbow Six 3
Splinter Cell
Unreal Championship
Unreal Championship 2
All of these titles except Steel Battalion, Mech Assaults, Conker, Brute Force, Crimson Skies, and Unreal Championship 2, are available cheaply on the PC. And out of those left, all but Conker, Brute Force, and UC2 have easy to find replacements.
Now this is all coming to a point, the xbox was a fine console. But like the others have said most of its best titles were ports, or were ported and enhanced. So aside from a couple games that are just best on the console - Gauntlet Dark Legacy, or the very few that are only on the console - Hunter the Reckoning and Metal Wolf Chaos. Now I dont think it will end up like the CD32 or Jaguar, but more like the SegaCD.

Re: How is the original Xbox shaping?
Two reasons for keeping an oXbox; better ports (do you really want to play the PS2 version?), and limited 360 backwards compatibility.
