Re: Commodore 64 questions
Since I've heard lately on this site that Sega Genesis controllers damage Commodore 64 controller ports, are there any d-pad type controllers ever made specifically for the Commodore 64?

I know you can in fact use Master System pads with no issues (they're basically the same as a 2 button Atari joystick inside)BurningDoom wrote:Since I've heard lately on this site that Sega Genesis controllers damage Commodore 64 controller ports, are there any d-pad type controllers ever made specifically for the Commodore 64?

Re: Commodore 64 questions
It's not that they damage the controller ports, it's that they can potentially cause damage to either the SID or CIA chips (the latter of which is an I/O chip) since the Genesis controller pinout is slightly different. That being said, you can safely use SMS controllers or Atari CX78 joypads with the C64; there were no control pads made specifically for the C64.BurningDoom wrote:Since I've heard lately on this site that Sega Genesis controllers damage Commodore 64 controller ports, are there any d-pad type controllers ever made specifically for the Commodore 64?

I believe you can use any Amiga joystick on a C64 without problems. Both machines only used 1 fire button on their joysticks.

Re: Commodore 64 questions
Well, I think the C64 might survive my purge, it's somehow managed to get a hold of my heart strings. I love the thing. Also I have an Atari joystick branded with "Joystick" and it's actually okay. Still not comfortable but much better than the authentic 2600 controller I also have. I will be getting a SMS pad soon for this thing. Commando is addicting but a PITA to play with those joysticks. Unfortunately Pirates! is on it's way out. Half the time it works, the other half it freezes when loading. Poor magnetic media. Their days are numbered.

Re: Commodore 64 questions
Hi everyone! I found a couple of brand new Konix Speed King joysticks and I was wondering if it's safe to plug them into my Commodore 64. On the box it says "For the Sega with Auto-fire". Or is it just that Sega's own controllers might damage my precious C64?

I wouldn't use Genesis ones on your C64. There was one specifically for the C64. It had the Konix branding in Europe but was sold as the Epyx 500XJ in the US.Oulunkylä wrote:Hi everyone! Commodore and 2600 are one Fire buttonRyaNtheSlayA wrote:I know you can in fact use Master System pads with no issues (they're basically the same as a 2 button Atari joystick inside)BurningDoom wrote:Since I've heard lately on this site that Sega Genesis controllers damage Commodore 64 controller ports, are there any d-pad type controllers ever made specifically for the Commodore 64?
I know the 2600 and Commodore Joysticks are just switches inside, no PCB. Does the Master System pads have a PCB inside with a Controller Chip and or does the second button short two pins that may damage the Commodore Chip?
I have used the Genesis Pad on my 7800, even though it has a Controller Chip PCB. I would not risk the Genesis Pad on a Commodore unless I gut the PCB and mod a direct single Fire button connection. Maybe the Master System two fire button controller might damage the Commodore?
Genesis Pads No, unsure of Master Pads, needs clarity with a look inside.
Inside of a Genesis Pad, note the glob chip:
