Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece but even with many innovations (and a lack on random encounters) making it the great game that it is, is still a RPG with many twists. The action timers make it more dynamic but it is still turn-based.

Secret of Mana has action-RPG gameplay in the style of top-down Zelda games, with stronger RPG elements like level ups. They are not that comparable.

If you don't like RPGs that much, even one as good as Chrono Trigger may not satisfy you more than an action-RPG like Secret of Mana (also quite a good game I think).

Why are you laughing at Final Fantasy VI? Its the only SNES 2D rpg games I played it took me like 60 hrs to complete(other than Mario RPG). I always wanted to play a Final Fantasy so I played this.

I hate random encounters and I like action more than turned based...
Hmmm...

How would you compare Chrono Trigger to Chrono Cross?
If Chrono Corss is better I guess Ill play Secret of Mana on SNES and Chrono Cross on PSX
since both games are only 20-30 hrs. I really dont want to play 60+hrs rpgs

If you like action more than turn based, choose Secret of Mana.

Chrono Cross is very different from Chrono Trigger as well, to be honest it's also kind of hard to compare them directly, not as much as CT vs SoM, but yeah. Personally I think CC is an excellent game with some of the best JRPG backdrops and art ever during that era, with some of the best music ever (I put Mitsuda above Uematsu honestly, but Uematsu is both quantity and quality as always), but I do think CT is the better game with a more coherent story. It also helps that CT has a lot more sci-fi elements compared to CC. Maybe that'll boost your interest in CT if you're a fan of sci-fi stuff. Admittedly even SoM has some of that stuff towards the end.

You're still exaggerating the numbers a bit though, even Chrono Cross is not that long compared to the PSX FF's and whatnot. CT, CC, and SoM should definitely not take you longer than 30 hours to finish.

I think they were laughing because FFVI is known for its length and it uses all the JRPG standards, so since you started off with saying you generally don't like JRPG conventions then it was silly to recommend FFVI. FFVI and CT are consistently ranked as the top two RPGs of the SNES era, and the order depends on the person.
