Many GameFAQs reviews are so absurdly poorly reasoned that its not even remotely something I'd consider 'trustworthy'.

They are also usually written by whiny, arrogant users that love to complain about EVERYTHING.

Regarding Duke Nukem Forever, I loved the game, different as it was.

But I also didn't go in expecting Duke3d. Lets face it, even if Forever did not have its troubled history, it wouldn't have lived up to Duke3d. 3d is just one of those classics that's never going to be beat.

Look at Doom, for instance. Most people didn't argue that Doom 3 was a bad game, just very different from its ancestors. But it was well loved just the same.

I thought it was a great game, but did it stack up to Doom 1 and 2? Nah, no way.

Not to mention shit like "I am reviewing A Link to the Past its a pretty good game I guess but its kinda overrated 1/10."

I dunno about that, there are some phenomenal reviewers on that site. It's my go-to place to find info about old C64/Apple II RPGs. Some extremely dedicated folks have written some great walkthroughs and thorough game reviews.

I guess my main point is that I'd rather read a bunch of reviews by fans than those written by folks who are paid to play (and enjoy specific) video games.

There's plenty of that, but there are also many people there who take the time to write well-reasoned reviews. It's Gamespot reader reviews that always suck.

DNF was panned because it was ugly, the humor was dumb and gross, the graphics and gameplay were outdated from the start, there were framerate issues on the console versions, and there's a load time every single time that you die. If a game gets bad reviews from a few places, that doesn't mean the game is for sure awful. But when the hate is this close to being unanimous, I think it says something's wrong with the game.

I enjoyed it. I played it from start to finish without a break. That's happened some 5 or 6 times in the last few years. Those games are Assassin's Creed 2, Uncharted 1 & 2, Metro 2033, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Duke Nukem Forever. They're the only games that have grabbed me by the nuts and compelled me to keep fucking playing.

It's flawed, yes. Of course it is, it had development start over again 4 times in its life and it was rushed to be brought to consoles. It really deserves to be played on PC. The console ports were shoddy with lots of bugs and extremely long load times. It's not the best way to play the game especially considering the punishing difficulty level (which isn't that hard really, but I'm biased, I played with Kb&M) forcing you to view the loading screen constantly. It's not the greatest game I've ever played but it was an entertaining, varied romp that entertained me for a good solid 8 hours.
