Is there any reason to use a PS1 over a PS2 for PS1 games?

Hmm, well I didn't play many PS1 games on my PS2 after I got component cables, but I never had any problems. I definitely played FF7 and MGS, can't remember any others, if any.

if you have a very early PS1, the sound is probably way superior - some audiophile type peeps use them as their main CD player - I think its the one with gold RCA/phono connections or something:

Glad I'm not the only one with this issue. I was really disappointed when I couldn play SoTN on component since the opening cinematic wouldn't load.emwearz wrote:Just wanted to say, getting PS1 games to work via component on a PS2 while hooked up to a HDTV is a pain in the ass and involves using homebrew apps to force the resolution.

The direct RCA connections just fools people, any decent CD player is better. Earlier PSXs with plastic rails in the reader also having skipping issues compared to later models. I have both the direct SVideo/RCA Japanese model and the 7000 model. Both sound the same.

That's another one I've played on my PS2 via component. What's the issue, some TV's don't like the signal? I guess I'm just lucky then. ::knock on wood::Croooow! wrote:Glad I'm not the only one with this issue. Component on the Wii is where I have a problem. I can't switch to 480p because the image will constantly freeze up for a few seconds. Almost everything works fine if I leave it on 480i, which still looks better than composite, but VC games don't like it. I can't play VC games with component cables.

Well, as has been brought up multiple times, the connections aren't even the reason audiophiles look at them. It's the particular DAC chip, primarily, which was discrete (and regarded as good in other devices), whereas later models don't have the same internal setup (well, post-5500, not just 1001). Since a common mod for the 1001 is to remove the op-AMP stage, and the A/V multiout bypasses it already, some suggest using that anyway (or mod optical out on).CRTGAMER wrote:NObaphomet_irl wrote:if you have a very early PS1, the sound is probably way superior - some audiophile type peeps use them as their main CD player - I think its the one with gold RCA/phono connections or something:

Objective measurements of the PSX CD playback show that it's really not audiophile grade, but does net output that's forgiving of source material (at least, that was Stereophile's take on it).
'course, other than direct, scientific measurements, audiophile rants and raves should be taken with a grain of salt.

That sucks. Being able to play VC games with component cables is one of my favorite things about the Wii.Ziggy587 wrote:Croooow! wrote:Component on the Wii is where I have a problem. I wasnt saying it was the connection that was supposed to 'make it good' just that that was how I thought you identified it. I heard it was the quality of the transport and the DAC (as you said) that were why it was 'good'.isiolia wrote:Well, as has been brought up multiple times, the connections aren't even the reason audiophiles look at them. Yeah, what everyone else already said. I personally play my PSX games (well, my US PSX games) on my PS3 because of the awesome Virtual Memory Card option as well as Wireless Controller. I play my Import PSX games on my PS2 though. Both of my original PSX consoles are in storage.
