Re: What are your favorite 8-bit era RPGs?
Looking through my collection for this post has made me realize just how shortchanged the Master System really was in the RPG department compared to the NES. That's ok though. What we lacked in quantity, we certainly made up for in quality. Count me in as another die hard fan of Phantasy Star!
Currently owned; Colecovision, Master System, TG-16/CD, SNES, Genesis/CD Mk1/32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, Jaguar/CD, Xbox, Wii, and PS3!!!
Dreamcast Tracker; 209 of 248 NTSC-U games collected.

Also, if anyone has the case art for Popful Mail (Sega CD), I'd like to speak with you!

Do remakes count? I've played quite a few 8 Bit RPG remakes, but only one ACTUAL original version, that being NES Dragon Warrior.
NES, SNES, PS1, N64, DC, PS2, GCN, Wii, PS3, 360, GB, GBC, GBA, GBA SP, PSP 3000, and 3DS XL

Re: What are your favorite 8-bit era RPGs?
Master System didn't have the strongest RPG library, but at least Phantasy Star and Ultima IV are absolute classics. (not the Ultima IV is exclusive...)
Re: What are your favorite 8-bit era RPGs?
Can games like Crystalis, Star Tropics, Zelda II and Ys (did nobody mention this?) really be called RPGs? They are more action-adventure games in my eyes. Maybe you might call them action-RPGs, but they are certainly not traditional RPGs.
They ARE awesome games, but RPGs?
Definitely the Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior games, along with Phantasy Star, are at the top of most lists. I'd say the top three are Dragon Warrior III, IV and Phantasy Star. Yes, Dragon Warrior III and IV are better than Final Fantasy... by a long shot!

This thread is really making me want to play Phantasy Star, and Dragon Quest III to see how it compares to the NES Final Fantasy games. Is it utterly grind heavy though? That's what scares me about the DQ games.
Re: What are your favorite 8-bit era RPGs?
I'm really enjoying Revelations: Demon Hunter on the Game Boy, and of course Phantasy Star is a favorite. I need to dig into the Dragon Warrior series, but who has time these days?

If you count SoM as an RPG then so is Crystalis.Breetai wrote:Can games like Crystalis, Star Tropics, Zelda II and Ys (did nobody mention this?) really be called RPGs? Yes they can be called RPGs, which has already been proven because several members called them that.Breetai wrote:Can games like Crystalis, Star Tropics, Zelda II and Ys (did nobody mention this?) really be called RPGs?
Now whether they should be called RPGs is another matter that we already have a thread for.
