8 button, unless you don't think Start is ever used during a game ;)

It looks the same at first glace, but if you open the casing and look inside, it's completely different (and overly complicated) from the newer ones. If you prefer the newer ones, I recommend switching the casing. You definitely want the one with the red highlights. It looks SOOOO much cooler!
Yup, especially with my model 1 Genesis.

I probably wouldn't use it much though, I've gone wireless~ http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 32&t=32866

Regardless of the wireless feature, the controller is the most comfortable Genesis controller I've used.
Older. Not wiser.

First time I've heard of this. Can you give us an example?
I believe in Fatal Fury 2 you can taunt your opponent with it. Lost Vikings and Battlecorps both use it as a normal gameplay button as well. I know some games you can assign it to switch items or even act as a weapon. There are many 6-button games that use it. It's a standard button on the controller just like any other, it just pulls double-duty when the controller first receives power.
In the 32X game Shadow Squadron, the mode button switches between first- and third-person views. I discovered this one by accident, since the manual doesn't mention it.

Thank god you knew this. From your GameSack ep about 16-bit controllers, I figured you were being funny or just never googled "genesis mode button". The vids make me laugh ("Moon language" ha!) but every once in a while you guys make some comment that makes me worry about your "game cred" :)
