Exactly. Most people that consider themselves "hardcore" play only a tiny selection of games and never really delve into the medium beyond a handful of titles. Meanwhile, the so-called "casual" crowd may play large quantities of different games but never take the time to even consider a label for themselves. In fact the "casual" crowd may play more games than someone here and never even know there is such a title.

My question is why has a 13 year old played a series who's last game got a 16+ rating in the EU and 15+ in the rest of the world. Not to mention you probably played it at a younger age than this since it's a 5 year old game.

Actually, it's 18+ in US. And these ratings really have no point. It doesn't stop parents, and many of the games rated this high (Like Oblivion) have no real reason to be rated this high. Its like the fact that I've been watching R rated movies for a pretty long time, the decision should be based on the maturity of the person.
Systems: Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, N64, Gamecube, Xbox 360

WTB: Boxes for a silver Gamecube System(and a hyperport cover), and a box for an Ice Blue N64 console. Will pay 7.50 for each and shipping.

I know it's not a law. My post was social commentary.

I'm just saying, in many cases the ratings are unneeded. Really the violence in Oblivion is at best cartoony, and I can only think of only one sexual reference, so really it should have been teen, but the computer mods changed that.

Besides the point, what I was trying to say in my last post is that the buying of games rated for higher than the age of the user, the decision should be based on what that person can take mentally. For example, my friend got really scared by horror movies as a kid, but I've never been bothered by them, and at times have found them funny.

Shit, I watched slasher movies all the time as a kid.

Oddly enough I consider myself a tad squeemish when it comes to gore. Desensitization my ass!

Same here although here in Mexico we have something much worse than slasher films desentitizing children: A sensationalist newspaper called Metro, a newspaper known for showing real pictures of corpses, gore, bloody crime scenes, etc. that is legal, is shown to children and people actually buy it (They don't ask for your ID and they always put the newspaper where everyone can see it). Now that's sick.

I think that game ratings are pretty pointless. What is more bizarre, though, is that a 13 year old is able to claim he is "hardcore".
