I have not played many but plan to though. Any recommendations as to what modern Sonic games are cool?

Official games and not fan created or hacked? Sonic 4 is probably my favorite post-Genesis Sonic game. Though I think they shoulda done more to make it feel more like the Genesis titles. Generations looks like it might be good, but it will still probably fall short of the feeling I get from the Genesis games.

When Dreamcast was first out, I remember playing Sonic Adventure and liking it. When I first got a Gamecube, the first game I had for it was Sonic Adventure 2. I remember liking it even more than the first one. I also played the Shadow game on the Cube. But this was a while ago now, I honestly probably wouldn't like those games much now if I tried them again. Maybe they're fun in their own right. But comparing them to the games on the Genesis... they suck big time.

When I first got my Wii, one of the first games I got for it was Secret Rings. I actually tried to get into this one, but I just couldn't. I kinda remember playing Heroes for all of about 5 seconds before I thought "WTF IS THIS!?" and turned it off.

I know a lot of people here say the Sonic Advanced games are good, but I could never get into them. Them seem pretty decent, but something is missing. They definitely don't have the same feel the Genesis games do. I'll probably give them another try at some point though.

Games that are pure bliss:
Sonic Rush
Sonic Colors (Wii)
Sonic Colors (DS)
^Make sure to play both versions of Colors, as they are completely different games, and both are fantastic!

Games that are generally liked, but considered by many to not be as good as the Genesis games:
Sonic Adventure / Sonic Adventure DX
Sonic Adventure 2 / Sonic Adventure 2: Battle
Sonic Advance
Sonic Advance 2
Sonic Advance 3
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1

Sonic Rush Adventure might be good, but I never recommend a game I haven't played. Other games I haven't mentioned usually aren't terrible games on their own terms, but are far from the quality we should expect from a Sonic game.

I think the problem with modern Sonic might be like trying to modernize something like Contra. Contra is nonsensical and simplistic. It's about 80's action movie lookalikes without any shirts blowing up aliens and bad guys all over the place. I think if you tried to add cut scenes and a narrative to a game like that you'd end up with an eyeroll inducing turd that takes itself too seriously. That's part of why I'm so enamored with Contra 4 on the Nintendo DS - it's this 16 bit, 1993-feeling game released on a 2007 portable. You blow stuff up, you collect power ups, you kill the boss, you get a high score. The characters don't have nuanced, endearing personalities and the game world doesn't have an engrossing back story. It's just fun. If it tried to have a serious story it would be weird.

Just a point of curiosity, but Contra: ReBirth, Contra: Hard Corps, and the Famicom version of the original Contra all have cut scenes and narrative. Thankfully these are short, to the point, and devoid of attempts at character development or depth, and do not detract from the games.

I don't feel like Sonic is in the "untranslatable to modern games" category. Sega came so close to getting it exactly right several times, and with Sonic Colors I feel like they finally nailed it down.

Sonic Rush just wasn't very fun. It constantly invited one to go really fast, and would then throw an enemy on the path at a spot where you'd be going too fast to react. Goodbye rings! Also, the only Sonic game I've ever played where I've reached a dead end and had a really hard time finding the correct path. It had great music, though.

You've got to be kidding about Sonic 4. That one had so many problems.

Tails is my favorite sega character. I loved him in Sonic Adventure 1 and hated how they ruined his game play in SA2.

Luigi and Tails should come out in a game together and have to save Mario and Sonic. Luigi, Peach, Tails and Amy in a 3d platformer. Make it happen Ninsega

I think so too, but it's often praised and recommended by other Sonic fans. There's a reason I worded the second category the way I did. It's not a personal recommendation so much as something he might want to check out, since a lot of Sonic fans seem to like it.

I thought you meant you liked all the games you mentioned, although others might not. Never mind, then.

I do like most of them, but I don't consider myself the foremost authority on Sonic games. Most of the games on the second list are otherwise great games that nevertheless have some irritatingly bad flaws, or games that are decent all the way through but never amazing.
