I've never had the collecting bug the way some people seem to get. So I say I still collect, but my approach has always been that I collect what I want to play.

My collection over the course of my lifetime is currently sitting (I'm estimating here) at around 400-500 games. Maybe. The number may be higher or lower depending on if you count digital games, but either way I can't be bothered to count them. Lazy. Over time, I've traded or sold about 50. So I've always been fairly particular about what I buy, and I never collect for the sake of collecting. Its just not in me to do that, especially when you consider the cost.

I suppose my numbers are pretty meager compared to a lot of other gamers, but I can say with confidence that I've spent many hours playing every single game in my collection. Not one of them has gone untouched.

Having said this, I'll never give up collecting, because my approach as it stands is just dandy.

i didn't want to call you a liar, but buying every snes game boxed in six weeks would be damn near impossible in this day and age - even if you do have a disposable income. but, 12 years ago it was probably a lot easier to accomplish.

i collect sega cd just for the sake of collecting. all said and done, i probably won't play 90% of them. after i buy every sega cd game i will probably move on to something else. i, however, know that at some point in my life priorities and/or interests will change and i will sell them off (or at least the games i don't play). and i am fine with that. i definitely don't collect because i see it as an investment. i collect because i think it is fun. but until my priorities/interests change, my shelf will hold useless plastic.

I actually limited to 50 games per console I own and around 10 games on newer consoles. For me, I don't have the space and money to buy more new games, so I force myself to pick only the best game in the collection. Those I don't want to keep them will be sell back to other people.

Guess you were doing it at the right time. Buying SNES games 12 years ago is a bit like buying PS2 games now. Still a very impressive collection though, I hope whoever bought it kept it intact.

I once imposed a similar rule on myself - I tried limiting myself to 15 games on each console. It didn't work too well, since it really ties your hands on consoles with a staggering number of AAA games (eg: Playstation 2), but isn't effective as a limiting principle on consoles with a small number of games (eg: Neo Geo Pocket Color).

It might be better to set your limit as a percent of the console's total library; eg: your collection may not exceed more than 20% of the game's total library.

I see your point and that is true. For me, I mostly collect console that is popular which mean they is too many games to choose. 50 games for me is a good set of games for a console or handhelds. I also adjust it base on how well the console and handheld sold during the time (this mean research a bit). From that, I adjust to what I think is a good limited. % format is good also but you gonna be careful. If the console have tons of games produce for it during the time, then you have too much games in your home.

This is true.

Just think, 20% of the PS2 library is what, 400 games?

If you're going to impose a hard limit, case by case is the probably the best way.

I sold off about 50% of my collection so far, I just don't have the time anymore. I kept my Nes, Snes, PS2, GC, Wii and PS3 consoles and games. I plan on selling my PS2, PS3 and GC stuff in the fall. All of my PSX, DC, Saturn, Xbox, Xbox 360, TG-16 and GBA stuff is gone. My cars are a lot faster now though. Most of my $ these days goes into my other money draining hobby, cars.

This rule would only lead to me buying more consoles.
