Decided to look at some of his reviews... and I cannot agree with him, at all.
Animal Crossing
Star Wars Bounty Hunter
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Mirror's Edge
Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers
Metalstorm
Those are the ones that I just glanced at. Looking at his Animal Crossing review, I wonder if he even knows how to enjoy video games.

Re: "The Video Game Critic"
I, too, was shocked and appalled by his dismissal of Animal Crossing. Is it so much of a stretch to appreciate a game with no scoring system or winning conditions?yomomma1 wrote:Decided to look at some of his reviews... and I cannot agree with him, at all.

Holy shit, This review made me almost have a brain aneurism. Star Wars Dark Forces PS1(not the score, this quote), "You assume the role of a generic rebel named Kyle Katarn"
Does he know who Kyle Katarn is? Is he being sarcastic? Kyle Katarn is the most badass star wars video game character, appearing in many different games.
Jesus, Look at all the video games he has been in! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kyle_Katarn
He was joking about Kyle Katarn being a nameless rebel, right right??

Re: "The Video Game Critic"
There are times where I couldn't agree with him more (he hated MadWorld), and other times where I think he's batshit insane (he gave Sin & Punishment: Star Successor a C+, and Contra: Shattered Soldier a D-). But that pretty much goes for my take on any critic.
Overall, I appreciate the briefness of his reviews, the amount of material he's covered, and the points he brings up. A worthy read, I'd say.

I imagine Kyle Katarn's Q rating is quite low.yomomma1 wrote:Holy shit, This review made me almost have a brain aneurism. Star Wars Dark Forces PS1(not the score, this quote), "You assume the role of a generic rebel named Kyle Katarn"

Ooh... Yeah the Star Wars Bounty Hunter one was pretty bad. I also didn't like his Zelda Ocarina of Time one.yomomma1 wrote:Decided to look at some of his reviews... and I cannot agree with him, at all.

However sometimes I do agree with him (like his reviews for New Super Mario Bros., Contra 4, and Starfox Adventures) so I keep up with him anyway.

Nope. They review games based on a short spurt of playing, without reading the manual or FAQ or anything. Images are courtesy of MobyGames, although I forget if they credit MobyGames or not.yomomma1 wrote:Decided to look at some of his reviews... and I cannot agree with him, at all.

It's not something I agree with (I only review games I beat by one means or another), but it is their established style. And given how long the site has been going, presuming this is all from one person, their tastes have changed radically over the years.
I've been to the site once or twice, unfortunately due to a fanatical follower or two who herd me over. I was very disappointed the first time, but I will admit to being slightly impressed that they had a forum going.
My scheduling skills have died of dysentery; I hope to visit at least on a monthly basis.
Still, don't forget to tip your waitress.

I came to post a similar thread, and am glad I searched first!
The strength of the site, IMHO is the huge range of systems and genres represented. "He" (occasionally the reviews have a 'submitted by correspondent--" line) seems open to at least trying almost any game. Though sometimes he seems to have done little more than try. I like the brevity of his reviews (about 250 words each) for scanning through and binging on reviews for unusual platforms. But the reviews are too brief when I'm really excited about a particular game and want to dive in. I agree with the previous reply that he doesn't seem to 'geek out' on games' development backgrounds and the industry personalities. One cute feature are the little icons he adds for the reviews that are a tongue and cheek take on other places' approach (e.g. Gamespot). It would be nice if he had more than one "borrowed" picture of each game. And what if, instead of or in addition to auction and affiliate Amazon links at the bottom of each site, he linked to the Wikipedia or even developer's site for each game? Granted, that might not have been as widely available when he started. As far as tastes go, I've paid the most attention to his Nintendo reviews and agree more often than not on his tone if not the exact score. Honestly, his site is close to one I'd like to create myself, except I'd aim for more like 450-500 word count, multiple unique images, reduce the scores to full letter grades instead of +/-s, and link beyond just ecommerce sites. One aspect I don't think he receives enough credit for is his very direct, readable writing style. He's a better writer (of game reviews....) than many so-called professionals.

Re: "The Video Game Critic"
Dave rules. He has the most reviews for a wide range of classic and modern consoles around. While I may not agree with a ton of his opinions (Reactor for the 2600 for example), he has pointed me towards a lot of great games and "hidden gems". He also will re-review games he did many years ago if the readers feel he was unfair, so he does believe in giving games a second chance.
He does credit the images he uses for his reviews.
Finally, he does have a sarcastic tone, as you may see in many of his reviews.

Yes, at the very bottom of a random page I just visited there, he does say screen shots courtesy of ign.com. I wasn't trying to pick on him. If I was, I would have mentioned how cheesy it is that the ability to select text on his site seems to be disabled to prevent people from copying it.ExedExes wrote:He does credit the images he uses for his reviews.
