They are in the PC version as well. They are just far less noticeable because they only last 0.5-2 seconds, compared to 5-15 in the PS2 version.

I played the second plus the episodes and then part of the first one afterwards. I'm thinking of playing the first one again though the whole way though, a Together Retro would certainly push me to do so.

Another check in the "not essential, but you really should anyway" column.

I dunno about that "don't like playing FPS on a PC with the proper equipment" statement though. :P

You can skip it if you want, they are set years apart. While the first is a classic, the second really upped it in every way you could imagine and is the better game in every aspect.

I found the original much harder to play today compared to the sequels.

This.

Don't even compare the Combine to the Marines of the original. The Marines are like the scariest thing ever. And damn their trip laser mine traps.

I don't like mouse/keyboard myself. And my first FPS's were Wolf3d and Doom on PC. But really, I'm a lot more comfy playing stuff with a controller.

HL1 Marines still have better AI than some NPC's in modern shooters.

Yep, I haven't forgotten them and never will. Only thing that might match them would be the enemy AI in FEAR, which was pretty damn good as well.

The AI in FEAR was great, but there were precious few times they used it. Most of the game was traversing narrow passages, you can't get flanked in a hallway.

just play HL2 on. As someone said HL2 is set 20 years later, a few characters were in Black mesa but they were not of importance really.

Also if you can get the 360 version, the PS3 version is more glitchy and slower to load than the 360 version. Well on PAL versions thats how it is anyway.
