it's a great series but i think that in order to understand it really, you shouldn't start with the first one. i love the first one but at one time i found it to be way to difficult. then i played MGS3....and i started to gain a deep and profound understanding of how awesome the series is. i just needed an outlet...and MGS3 was the best. Chronologically, it is the first game in the story, so i would recommend you play that one first, i really do.
and all of you who have MGS4 and haven't touched it, i feel you owe it to yourselves. it takes a bit to really pick up but when it does.....HOLY SHIT. seriously the best ps3 experience you can get as of right now.
