bill gates purchased ms-dos (then called scp-dos) from a small computing company in washington state called seattle computer products. he then modified it and made a deal (a very, very, very wise deal) with ibm to have ms-dos pre-installed on all their machines.
he's a genius, but not so much in that he's a good programmer. he's just an incredibly amazing businessman.
