I haven't used a VCR since like 2001. Got rid of all my tapes and got my movies on DVD.

Thanks for the info everybody. I will find one and pick it up. I just got the rocky saga for 3 dollars. All 5 for three dollars!!! I would rather have that than trying to pick up the saga for 30.00 on dvd or 60.00 for blue ray. I want to get the star wars saga on vhs but I dont know or recall if they came out with the trilogy as a whole or do I get the singles or for that matter is there better versions or quality? thanks

Actually, one of the VHS editions of the original trilogy is considered the best version, even over the DVD versions. It has the redone special effects, without the added footage. I can't remember which VHS set it was, but if you look up Star Wars VHS tapes on Amazon, you should be able to figure it out from the reviews.mas wrote:Thanks for the info everybody. If you can find the letterboxed cassettes like this set, that would be the best VHS because it preserves the original aspect ratio of the movies. Most copies you usually find are pan and scan which is yucky.

There is also the THX widescreen set too.

The 1997 Special Edition is what you refer to, and it still has most if not all of the added/changed scenes that were in the DVD versions released later. It is still better than the DVDs imo though, since it doesn't have the wonky colors (bluecast everywhere) and doesn't replace Sebastian Shaw's head with Hayden Christensen's in ROTJ.BoringSupreez wrote:Actually, one of the VHS editions of the original trilogy is considered the best version, even over the DVD versions. The '97 vhs tapes are the gold ones. There's a set released later that looks more like the Episode I vhs that's afaik just the '97 set in letterbox widescreen.
Personally, I'd go with one of the sets Betamax001 posted above, since I (like many others) find many of the SE changes to be... questionable.

Got a high quality JVC at Goodwill for like 5 dollars. If you keep your eye out there, you''ll likely find one that still works great for dirt cheap.

I don't know about what would be the best one to get (just enough to know not to get a vcr/dvd combo), but I still use my Sanyo VCR regularly to watch my thrift store finds. It's pretty durable. We had lightning strike the house last year and it took out the cable box, tv, and dvd player, but my old VCR lives on. Go figure
Best of all, those thrift store ones are dirt cheap. Just make sure you test the sucker first or at least find a store that tests them for you and puts a nice sticker on it telling you so. My local Sheriff affiliated thrift store does that and they've never let me down. They also, coincidentally, have the best VCR tapes in the area.

If you can find one that does a good job automatically adjusting tracking like the Toshiba I've had for years you may be in for a treat. The auto-tracking works surprisingly well on mine and even really worn tapes can usually look pretty good. I happily watch VHS tapes on the same CRT TV I play older generation consoles on.
