I only started playing consoles when I was in 7th grade. Most of my friends had Gamecubes, and one summer my best friend gave me his Super Nintendo to babysit while he was in the States. That's when I got addicted and that's when I discovered Terranigma, to this day one of the best RPGs I've ever played (And I've beat most of the Final Fantasy games).
A few years later, I got a PSone and a couple of games, mostly RPGs. I loved that console, and I had a lot of great times with its massive library. But alas, multiplayer is a must, and for that reason, I just had to get an N64. Playing Mario Kart stoned is a spiritual experience, I tell you!
I was content with those two consoles for quite a while because they gave me everything I needed.
It was only after I was finished with school and bored out of my mind that I bought a Gamecube. I was blown away by the graphics, even though I'd played the current generation consoles. But because I'm a late adopter by choice, I was able to thoroughly enjoy these visuals.
Half a year later, I was browsing the web and stumbled upon this fine website's articles for the Dreamcast. So now I have four consoles, two of which are in use. I gave the other two to friends who are casual gamers and like the nostalgia.

First system was a Game Boy with Zelda: Link's Awakening.
Shortly after that I lost my first tooth and my mom got me a copy of Yoshi for NES (I had wanted it for GB). She felt bad and later got my brothers and I an NES. We went through three of those :? .
I wanted an SNES incredibly badly (played it all the time at my cousins' and daycare) but my somehow knew about consoles and waited and bought us an N64 about a year after launch.

My brother's both had GBCs and I played theirs all of the time and I ended up getting one for Christmas.
I broke my arm in junior high and for some reason my mom bought me a GBA which had come out about 2 weeks earlier. I got Golden Sun, THPS2, and Advance Wars with it :D .
My brother and I bought a Gamecube shortly after launch.

The next year we were at a flea market and we bought a PS1, the first non-Nintendo system in our family.
We liked PS1 so much we borrowed one of my brother's friend's extra PS2s. After that went bad I bought one of my own.

I didn't buy any consoles for a few years until I started getting into gaming again my Junior year of college. After drunkenly winning $100 I bought a Dreamcast. I got a Wii that Christmas, replaced my phat PS2 with a slim, bought my brother's DS along with an SP, and also bought a Genesis (which I later had to sell along with the Dreamcast). To congratulate myself for getting a job after college I bought a Japanese Sega Saturn.

Well my father had an Atari 5200 when I was a toddler, thought I don't really remember it. Out family got an NES when I was about 5, and I think it was just with Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt and Zelda. At some point not long after this, my mother found an old Atari 2600 at a tag sale, and I found myself surprisingly entertained by it. We didn't get anything 16 bit until 1994, since I had wanted a Genesis, but my brother wanted an SNES, and my parents would only get us one. My mind was changed when I saw Donkey Kong Country, but for some reason my brother switched as well, but my mother just decided to go with the SNES.

At some point not long after this, I got a Game Gear and Atari Jaguar (I have no idea why I wanted one), and my brother got a Sega Master system from another tag sale. I ended up getting a lot of other retro systems over the 90s, including a Colecovision, Vectrex, Intellivision, and Atari 5200, but I don't really remember when I got them, and I finally got a Genesis a year or two after the SNES.

We got the N64 not long after it came out, and I ended up getting a Saturn around the time that that died. It was actually rather convenient to get a Saturn around then, as I got Shining Force III and Dragon Force before the prices skyrocketed, and EB was selling off their import titles for like $10 a pop. A friend of mine got the Dreamcast launch day, and after playing that, I new I needed one, so I ended up getting one for Christmas. I ended up not getting into other newer systems that much after that, but I did buy a Neo-Geo Pocket Color around the time those were recalled because I heard that SNK vs. Capcom: the Match of the Millenium was the closest thing to a great Capcom fighter on a portable machine. I actually had barely touched SNK games before that point, but that game blew me away enough that I ended up getting a Neo Geo CD not long afterwards.

I think that covers it for the particularly significant acquisitions.

First System: Famicom, xmas 1984, I had no idea what it was until the NES was released, but I had fun. I still have it and it still works. I had a 5200 at the time, but it was more my sister's cuz she loved playing "Breakout" and i got sick of Frogger and Pac-Man.

80's:
5200
Famicom
Master System
Genesis/MD
Super Grafx
Game Boy
Lynx

90s
Super Famicom
Turbo Express
Sega CD
NES (finally)
Super NES
PS1
N64
Dreamcast

00s
GBC
AV Famicom
PS2
GBA SP
PSP 1000
DS Lite
PS3
DSi
J360
PSP 3000GT

I still have all of these except the 5200. I have more systems than these (Saturn, a lot of repeat systems), but these are all systems in which I am the first owner.

Most recent Systems: Bought at PSP-3000GT (JPN) on launch day, and I bought a J-360 in the same transaction. I already had a PSP, but I had to have the Gran Turismo version which just had a little GT logo on the front, tinted L/R triggers, and gunmetal garnish.

Next System: 3DS

I was given a NES in 1993 when I was 5 with about 20 games, all the staples. My dads friend gave it to him when she got an SNES. I gained an additional 40-50 games when my mom worked at a place that rented them and got rid of them. They gave them all to my mom for me cuz I rented there all the time.
