I can only assume it makes it more difficult by ramping up enemy health, or decreasing your ammunition. That doesn't make it scary.

I would say for a game to truly be scary it needs to hit you on a psylogical level. Something I am told the Silent Hill games do well and Eternal Darkness did a decent job of too.

Dead Space is kind of like Resident Evil 4 in that it creates a creepy mood and atompshpere. However, it actually does this much better than RE 4 did, but at the end of the day the game is just, "BOO!" type scares and like recent RE games it is mostly about killing everything in sight. There is never really a fear of "survival" in Dead Space as you always have what you need to kill anything that comes after you. You've got multiple guns and even the plasma cutter you start the game with can kill everything that comes after you. In many ways, Dead Space is not very different from recent RE games despite everyone saying that it is

The amount of acclaim Dead Space has gotten is just another example to me of how easy gamers are to impress these days. That is just my opinion though as I am not looking to offend anyone who likes the game

I'm curious, did you read and listen to the logs during Dead Space and Dead Space 2? I feel people often overlook them as a potential source of horror. Not so much in the fear variety, but rather just really creepy and unsettling, much more psychological then the rest of the game. Two prime examples from Dead Space 2 that stand out to me are the logs from the lone worker on the solar array station. They reveal his decent into madness quite well I thought. Then in chapter 10, there is a series of logs from a shift worker, who hears things in the walls, and eventual is freaked out enough that he swears he will never return to work.

The more subtle sounds in Dead Space 2 also scared the crap outta me at times. There is one entire chapter where if you listen closely you can just hear Nicole say 'Isssssaaacccc' over and over really quietly. Or just hearing Necromorphs grunting off in the distance. Really put my nerves on edge.

Those are not really 'Boo!' type of scares, so I am curious as to your thoughts on them. Do those things just not affect you? Or maybe you didn't even notice them at all?
