thanks for everyone
I figured it would have been better on the pc,
but for me i like to play the 64, I have some kind of a bond with this system

first full 3d fps? makes since why it was the game to set the bar
graphical jump in that era was insane too
64 was released only 3 years before quake II,
Quake II was released in the same year of the Dreamcast...compare the two graphics level
That didnt help the 64 version

did Doom have comepetitve multiplayer?

Doom did. That was part of the reason it was so huge.

If you want some more background on id, I'd highly recommend the book Masters of Doom by David Kushner. It explains the rise of id really well, which is a very interesting story

Let's not forget Quake also made some major strides in multi-player. It greatly expanded upon Doom's deathmatch concept and gave us incredible user created mods like the original Team Fortress.

IIRC, wasn't it the first FPS to let you type-chat with other players?

But here is a good question...

if Quake did all of this....then what is the significance of Unreal Tournament?

The time Unreal Tournament was released, FPS games were focusing more on the Multiplayer. Most FPSes prior such as Half-Life, Unreal (not Tournament), Blood, and even the previous Quakes had both a Single Player Campaign and a Multiplayer Mode. When Unreal Tournament and Quake III came out, it became common for FPSes to not even have a single campaign at all.

I'd like to second this. Masters of Doom is an amazing read. I've read it three times myself and loved it every time.

I'm not terribly fond of Quake, it diverted attention from genres that made the PC unique. That said, first time I played the shareware it gave me quite the scare.

At the time, Quake was part of what made PC games unique. No console had anything that came close at the time.

It may have been, couldn't tell you for sure but I wouldn't be surprised.
