For 3D games: Xbox 360 is unbeatable, totally comfortable to use for hours on end, great analogue triggers for driving games. With the Dualshock3 I hate the stupid position of the analogue sticks, those retarded analogue triggers and just the stupidly tiny size of the damn thing. Why have the problems of this controller (poor placement of sticks and crappy d-pad not been fixed yet? It's been over 10 years now...) The Wii's classic pad is better thanks to the superior d-pad but still, odd position of the sticks makes it a little odd for playing 3D games, but it is quite versatile for the consoles that the Wii supports. So yeah, to re-iterate the 360 is tops for 3D games.
For 2D games: Saturn. Great d-pad, 3x3 button layout makes it perfect for beat em ups (in the absence of an arcade stick of course) and it's just such a nice controller to play with for a long time.

1) Gamecube. IMO, the A, B, X, Y were laid out perfectly. You could easily feel the difference between each button. The only issue I have with it, is that Z button, but I think of where else it should go. I also find it funny that so many people have put in on their list even though its almost universally, critically, panned.
2)Saturn model 2 pad. This this is awesome for 2D games, its the best
3)Wii remote an nunchuk, IMO many games have used its very intuitive design, and IR point is so far ahead of any other way to select things, I wish my TV and BD player used it instead of a remote.

1. Wireless Xbox 360 Controller (w/ Messenger Pad!): While many will argue that the D-pad is the worst thing ever... Everything else about this controller is flawless! (I wonder if that new Twisty-D-pad model is the bees knees?)
2. Sega Saturn (Japanese Style) Controller: This is where it's at baby! I even prefer the Ascii FT Fighter Pads on the Dreamcast which are similar in design! Best controller for fighting games! (I'm a D-pad fighter... I dislike Arcade Sticks!)
3. Wii Classic Controller Pro (?): I can't really think of my 3rd favorite pad... so this one will have to do! ::shrug::

1) Dreamcast
2) 360 (dreamcast clone, imo)
3) Dual Shock 3
The DC just feels good. If anyone can disagree with that, they're either full of crap, or have a hand deformity.

I'm shocked that people like the 3D Saturn controller, it's huge! I consider that along with the original Xbox large controller and the Dreamcast controller to be the worst ever. From my experience in controllers, big = shit.
1. SNES
2. Wii Classic Pro
3. GameCube
4. Xbox 360
5. PS3

A lot of it depends on your hand size. My hands aren't that big, but my fingers are quite long, and I tend to like bigger controllers for that reason. Though, I agree that the oXbox and Dreamcast controllers are fairly poor.

1. Xbox 360
Not sure if it's because I use this the most over the last few years, but it's pretty flawless. It's essentially the Dreamcast controller on steroids. Better shoulder buttons, good sturdy letter buttons, better sticks than the Playstation (and better location), D-pad probably not the best, but the X button in the middle is brilliant. I know some people hit it accidentally when trying to press Start but you get used to it. Plus it's wireless. Plus you can use it (well I use my wired one) on PC for emulators. Better size than the tiny PS3/2/1 and no need to fuck about moving it like the Wii.
2. N64
I think I find this to be a great controller due to the games that worked with it. Mario 64, Goldeneye, Zelda, can you imagine playing them with another controller? The stick is awesome, still holds up well today. Buttons are pretty old school in their feel, but the Z button is timeless. Perfect positioning on all buttons although the D pad is a bit far away. And you can't really use the L button unless you use the D pad. Really sturdy and lightweight though, and I preferred it at the time as PS was too small, and never really played the Saturn much.
3. Dreamcast
Decent D pad, good stick, brilliant Start button. Probably my favourite letter buttons, loose but not too loose. Good triggers (360 improved upon this). Like the N64 I found they never broke or got damaged, although sweat would accumulate on the trigger buttons. And being white it gets dirty easy. BUT, HAS THE BEST MEMORY CARD EVER. Plus you can put two in!

1: Wii remote (plus). It conforms nicely to my hands, has an excellent D-pad, and does very well as a light gun substitute on non-CRT televisions. It's modular and can be expanded with the nunchuck, classic controller, and any number of other enhancements they might come up with in the future. This is probably the single most versatile controller that has ever been made.
2: Saturn model 2 pad. Easily the most comfortable, most responsive 2D-only controller I've ever used.
3: N64 controller. Fits my hands perfectly. Easy to grip, but not too fat. Very versatile thanks to the three "positions" possible--no reaching way the hell over to get to the analog stick. Great range of analog motion. Six top-facing actions buttons. I love it.

1. Gamecube: Ergonomic button and stick placement, along with some of the best triggers ever seen on a controller. It also had a lovable, quirky style to it that just makes it not only a usable controller, but a fun one, if that makes sense.
2. Saturn 3D Pad: Super-comfortable analog stick/pad, lightweight while still feeling balanced, and retained the standard D-Pad and buttons of the normal Saturn controller. Also had a detachable cable that probably would have beet useful, had somebody actually made use of it.
3. Dreamcast: Quite possibly the most stylish stock controller ever designed. The VMU would put it in the top 5 alone due to the ingenious idea, but it also has great triggers, simple face buttons, and a smooth-sliding analog stick. Kudos to you, Sega.
