They're both very good. Year One and The Dark Knight Returns were the two books were Frank Miller gave us the darker Batman that most of us are familiar with today. Year One shows you how Batman and Gordon became a team and gives you a rare glimpse of "rookie" Batman. You might get a sense of familiarity while reading this if you watched Batman Begins
Killing Joke really gets into the mind of the Joker and is a good read. Also, if you know who Oracle is, this is the story where that started.

That sounds great. I just went through the ultimate bookshelf thing on IGN and some titles really caught my eye but the most had to be Lone Wolf and Cub. YES. I'm actually quite surprised someone mentioned this, as I've not ever met someone who actually knew what Little Nemo was (at least, not in this form). I do very much like Little Nemo, but it's not very recent.
For the record GamerforLife, I'm the only person I know of that actually enjoyed Arkham Asylum.
To add to the list of excellent Batman trades that were recommended(I haven't read Mad Love or JLA: Tower of Babel, but I have read all the others and they're all amazing), I really enjoyed these:
Batman: A Death in the Family - I've always felt that this and The Killing Joke really help flesh out how sick, twisted, and depraved The Joker is...and also how diabolical and intelligent. If you ever wondered whatever happened to the second Robin, go read this and find out.
Batman: Hush - Not only a great storyline to show Batman who his friends are, this one adds to Batman and Catwoman's strange love affair AND gives a certain villain that just doesn't get enough respect his due.
After those, if you really want more, there's always Batman: Knightfall, but the artwork in that one grates me. And there's Bat-Manga, a very interesting look at a Japanese take on Batman.
As for other DC storylines that I enjoyed:
Superman: Red Son - I don't usually care much for Superman stories, but this one will always be king to me. What if Superman landed 12 hours later in Siberia? Awesome concept.
Kingdom Come - This storyline has always struck me as epic. The story, the art, everything about this trade is why I've always felt DC reaches mythic proportions with their material. DC characters aren't superheroes, they're gods walking the earth.
And then from Marvel...oh Hell, Marvel's pissed me off so many times I just can't stand it anymore. The only book I want to reccomend is Nextwave. I felt X-Men turned to shit a decade ago, Spider-Man did so officially with the "One Last Day" storyline or whatever the hell that was, and even the likes of Captain America is being messed up with their horrendous attempts to retcon his death.

Darwyn Cooke; New Frontier and his Batman stuff for starters.
Hellboy Library Collection is Mignola at his finest.
Fables, Sandman and 100 Bullets for more mature stories.
Promethea or Tom Strong by Alan Moore for some newer stuff he did that was quite good.
Grant Morrison's Batman
Geoff John's Green Lantern from Rebirth on
Angel: After the Fall and/or Buffy Season 8; even the Buffy and Angel Omniboo's by Dark Horse are good. Other lines in the Dark Horse Omnibus series of note are Indiana Jones and Star Wars titles.
Bone is great if you've never read it.
Long Halloween, Dark Victory and the Halloween stories are fantastic.
I'm sure there's more, just not thinking clearly at the moment...
If you want classic titles in softcover, pick up the Marvel Essentials or the DC Showcase line. In HC pick up Marvel Masterworks or the Omnibus', from DC it's the Archives line though I'm very partial to the Absolute format as well.

Fore more surprises: I can name the author off the top of my head -- Winsor McCay. And why shouldn't people on this forum know about him? As old as he was, they did make a Little Nemo videogame, and I vaguely recall a movie some years back.
Altogether great stuff -- The Rare-bit Fiend is a better bunch of his work. Predates the Nemo strip, and incorporates the same beautiful artwork with weirdness, but this time, with an adult audience in mind.
I'll restate it, too. If you like McCay, run -- don't walk -- to your nearest shop and find some of Tony Millionaire's work.

My last Reply had a link to all the Little Nemo Strips. To show how ate up I am I downloaded them all, threw in the McCay bonus pages including a new single page remake. Rescipted the pages now the entire package is on a CDR. True genius at Imagination and Architectural Points, one of the download pages poked fun how words had to be squeezed in to fit the speech balloons.
