Re: Games NOT beaten: 2011
I'm in the middle of Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time. I'm about to get the 3rd Spirit Stone from inside this giant fish thing. Frankly, I'm not that impressed yet.
I'm also in the middle of Panzer Dragoon: Orta on XBox. And my gosh, that game is blowing me away. It just has some of the most beautiful visuals of the entire last generation and is definetly an underrated gem on XBox. Much better than the original on Saturn which I own, but then that's to be expected when it's an entire generation apart. I still haven't played Panzer Dragoon: Zwei, yet though. So I don't know how it compares to it.

Kirby's Epic Yarn
Metal Arms: Glitch in the System
Kirby's Yarn has two things going against what it otherwise a wonderfully creative and original platformer. First of all, you can't die. This means, there is no checkpoint system. So if you miss getting a certain item in a level, there is no way to replay that part of the level without starting the whole stage over. Also, if you fall into a pit and lose a ton of gems-killing your chance of getting a gold medal for that stage-you can't just reload your last checkpoint or kill yourself to go back to it because, again, there IS no checkpoint system.
Secondly, there is simply too much going on in some stages. I got annoyed with a level called Future City, which ultimately made me decide to stop playing the game for good. You start the level trying to collect gems on a moving rollercoaster, which is annoying. Then, there is some 2d platforming which includes an annoying section where you have to use these platforms to move up, but enemies keep dropping on to them and weighing them down impeding your progress, then you get to this other annoying part where you turn into a flying saucer and have to fly around avoiding flames and enemies. That part alone could have been a seperate stage.
Then, another 2d platforming section, which includes an annoying part with a bunch of flames you have to avoid while jumping from platform to platform. Then ANOTHER rollercoaster part, which is longer than the first one. Trying to play through ALL this crap without getting hit or falling into a pit(to get a medal for that stage)just pissed me off. This feels like THREE levels crammed into one. It's TOO MUCH. Some designers don't understand the concept of "less is more"
As for Metal Arms, it's a funny game with fun characters and funny dialogue. However, even though it makes an effort to try and vary things up every few levels with things like driving levels, turret sections and a really annoying bemani inspired simon says section, the game is too damn long. Forty levels of mostly just shooting and killing the same enemies over and over again with standard issue, been done a thousand times third person shooter gameplay. It just gets old.
Also, the game's replay level feature is stupid. You can replay a previously completed level, but the game won't save your new status. So if you have precious little ammo your first time beating a level or you missed picking up a cool new weapon or weapon upgrade, that status gets saved PERMANENTLY. Kinda makes having a replay level feature pointless
So I'm focusing completely on playing Okamiden now, which hasn't given me reason to give up on it yet

This is a delightful idea.Gamerforlife wrote:I know a lot of people here start certain games and never finish them and I wanted to make a topic for that, inspired by our Games Beaten:2011 topic.
So far for me, Contra Rebirth: (hard difficulty).
I've beaten this before, but for about three nights in a row, I haven't beaten the s.o.b. I'll get back to it eventually, but I'm putting a pin in it for now.

Okamiden
It tries too hard to copy the original. Feels too much like a rehash and it's not even as well put together as the original
The characters are lame, combat is worse than the original, localization is crap, brush techniques lack accuracy(a problem the original sometimes suffered from too) and they are way too many permanently missable items
A poor imitation of the original Okami

19 April - Sonic Adventure 2 (GCN)
I officially give up on trying to beat Sonic Adventure 2. The Knuckles / Rouge levels are just too damn annoying. I actually gave up a couple of months ago but popping it back in today made me realize it's official. Screw this game.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

How far did you get? And yes, Knuckles/Rouge (especially Rouge) stages are the worst in the game. They're not just mediocre, they're downright bad.Flake wrote:19 April - Sonic Adventure 2 (GCN)

I got to, literally, the first Knuckles stage. Give up. Then the first Rouge stage. Give up.BoringSupreez wrote:How far did you get? And it's such a damn shame because I was enjoying the game immensely before that. Why couldn't they have just taken the Sonic Adventure approach? Being able to skip playing as shit characters was part of that games charm!

Re: Games NOT beaten: 2011
I do this too often because of the size of my library. Sometimes I get bored or frustrated with certain games. Between this past Christmas and my birthday in February, I received a little over 15 games between Xbox 360 and the Wii so I was overwhelmed and didn't know where to begin. Side tracking from the topic for a second, I beat two of the recent games I got. My wife and I were playing Donkey Kong Country Returns for the Wii, we got frustrated with it from the difficulty and took a break from it, sometimes you just have to do that. While we were playing that, I was playing Transformers: War for Cybertron and Battlefield: Bad Compnay 2(these are the two above mentioned games I beat). I'm usually not this unorganized when playing games but I was overwhelmed with all the games I received as gifts. My schedule is also very hectic w/ a full time job, marriage, and school at night so that plays a HUGE factor in free time available to play anything. Put it this way, I got Call of Duty: Black Ops for my birthday and didn't play it until April! I have NEVER not played a new game I get right away, it's just frustrating to be overwhelmed. As a result, I have pretty much stopped buying games and once school is over for the semester in a few weeks then I'm going get some serious gaming under my belt this summer. I have barely touched Super Street fighter IV and I'm dying to get into that too.
Aside from the free time issue to not beating games, I think I just lose interest to certain games or again the frustration factor plays a role and I need a break so I get into another game. Eventually, I'll go back to DK Country Returns to beat it. Right now I'm working on Star Wars: Force Unleashed and really into the story line so I'm motivated to beat it (I should also add that I'm a HUGE Star Wars fan!
). I'm actually going to make a list of what I want to get into as far as my recent additions to my collection and go from there. I think that's my best bet at this point and help my sanity!

I am addicted to video games, especially retro gaming from my era. I have: NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Gameboy, GBA, Wii, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Dreamcast, PS1, PS2, Xbox, and Xbox 360. I have probably over 1,000 games in total for all these systems combined. Yes, I need help and I wouldn't have it any other way! This is my passion and hey my wife still loves me!!

Darksiders.
Started to play through this one on PS3. I like the gameplay well enough...but I care so little about the characters and story, and the world isn't my style at all. After playing through Portal 2 it was just too hard to go back. Doubt I'll pick this one back up...

Re: Games NOT beaten: 2011
Pulseman Virtual Console
Lords of Thunder Virtual Console
Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble Game Boy Color
Sonic Adventure Dreamcast
Panzer Dragoon Saturn
Discworld Saturn
Wave Race Blue Storm Gamecube
Games Off The List: Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg
Games onto the list: Panzer Dragoon, Discworld, Wave Race: Blue Storm
My list has increased this month - lots of games started recently that I haven't had the time to finish yet (panzer, discworld) plus wave race which I gave up on for now. I did knock Billy Hatcher off the list at least, as well as beating several games which were never on this list like Kid Icarus 2 and the deja vu games.
I'm thinking I may play this list as my Snickerdoodles Summer Game Challenge list this summer, although they aren't really 'awesome' games as such. I guess I'll see what other people are playing first.
