Metal Heads Assemble!!

I dart in-and-out of the metal genres from time to time, though I'm mostly an electronic music and jazz guy. I like guys that can shred: Steve Vai, Buckethead, Adrian Belew, Joe Satriani. I also like industrial metal like Ministry, Course of Empire, etc. I'm also into a few avant garde kinds of groups like Idiot Flesh and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. And of course the classics, like Judas Priest, AC/DC, and others.

I'm not exactly a metal head though and I'm not as adept at identifying and labeling the different subgenres of metal as am with electronic music. You guys are always mentioning bands and genres I've never heard of, which I appreciate because it gives me something new to look for.

I've never been a GIANT metal head. (more alternative for me, personally) but the bands that I do listen to are Killswitch Engage (Jesse, and Howard era, love both. Jesse's songwriting is phenomenal but I feel Howard's screams are just plain better.), Bullet For My Valentine, and some Deftones. I'm also quite partial to some classic metal (Metallica and the like) but at previously stated, I'm mostly into alternative.

SGM! Eff yea dude! I saw them play in Mass, it was AWESOME. Tub Ring opened up for them, it was small bar and got to meet everyone at the end. Good times. Glorious times actually. Ha

Oh yeah, I know them and the song "Shut Me Up".. Glad somebody got the reference!

J T, check out a band called And Oceans, they mix metal with electro in a similar fashion to Kovenant..

64daysofstatic is another quasi electronic band. They're not metal, but they mix electronics with Post Rock... good stuff.

I don't think that I need to say that I loves my Heavy Metal. I've been listening to Heavy Metal since my teens and have no plans of stopping. My favorite sub-genre is Thrash Metal. Some of my favorite bands are Heathen (love their latest album), Destruction (I seem to be the only person that likes their newer albums as much as their classic work), Gama Bomb (recent favorite of mine, thanks Ack!), At the Gates, and Skeletonwitch (another band recommended to me on this forum, don't know who, though).

I recently went to my first Metal Concert. It had Job For a Cowboy headlining (ugh) but Skeletonwitch was there. They performed a kick ass set list of about 6 songs, most of them being my favorites. They sounded as good live as they do in this music video. It was a kick ass concert even though JFAC's short setlist sounded like one long song with an occasional break.

I effing hate "metal core" bands like Killswitch Engage (I know they have the former Blood Has Been Shed singer)... I think they're crap!

I hate most Metal Core bands, too but there are some bands that give me hope. The Red Chord, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Rising Pain (second album) are good bands that showcase what Metalcore has to offer.

Not necessarily... more or less just Technical Metal... crazy time signatures, meter changes, tempo changes, 12 tone scales and atonal craziness, dissonant harmonies, all around noisy yet wicked skilled shit, often with a lot of obvious jazz influence, but metaled the fuck out. ex. Dillinger Escape Plan (avoid their albums Ire Works and Option Paralysis, at first anyway), Into the Moat, Car Bomb... a lot of the bands I listed on my first post. Tech-Death is technically (heh) Tech Metal too, bands like The Faceless, Cryptopsy even... I'd call them Technical Death Metal.

Yeah, that's a band that really needs to be experienced live. I have seen them roughly half a dozen times. They put on a great stage show and it's cool to see some of the instruments they invented like the piano log.

And I thought when you said tech metal you meant like techno metal. I was thinking along the lines of Pitchshifter or something like that. In electronic music, anytime something is labeled as tech, it usually has a robotic sounding influence to it.

I'm old school, and I can't go a day without hearing something from Pantera. They are the best metal band from the 90s. I know they technically started in the 80s, but c'mon, that isn't the REAL Pantera.
