If this really is a monumental as claimed, does that mean that those old modded X-Box emulator stations can finally be replaced? Will the PS3 replace the original X-Box as the console of choice to run emulators on?
To be honest, that is all I would use it for. My PS3 is already my primary media hub. My Wii is acting as my emulation hub (since I don't feel like having a bulky X-Box in my living room). The emulation on the Wii is not as good as the X-Box. If the PS3 is, I will be very happy.
Is this something so bad that it will hurt the software sales of the PS3 as much as hacking hurt the DC, X-Box or even PS1? I hope not... but, it is looking like it might based on what this thread seems to say.

I really hope that the PS3 gets the same quality homebrew that the oXbox got, as well. A Dreamcast emulator is in the works, as well as a PS2 emulator, so we'll see where all this goes.Breetai wrote:If this really is a monumental as claimed, does that mean that those old modded X-Box emulator stations can finally be replaced? Hmm... You think it could be a possible end to the PlayStation line of home consoles?Breetai wrote:Is this something so bad that it will hurt the software sales of the PS3 as much as hacking hurt the DC, X-Box or even PS1? Probably, yes. Linux is already booting on the bare hardware here. XBMC runs on Linux. Any emulator that exists on Xbox already has a linux version (often the xbox version is a port of Linux software). Getting these emulators up and running will be even easier than the Xbox versions, since the binaries can be distributed freely. Xbox software on the other hand, even homebrew, contains Microsoft copyrighted code. There will probably be a PS3 specific distro with everything you need set up and ready to go, expect this to happen quickly.Breetai wrote:If this really is a monumental as claimed, does that mean that those old modded X-Box emulator stations can finally be replaced? Sony makes money on every PS3 system sold these days, so even if someone buys a PS3 only to hack it and steal games they're still making a profit. It's not going to kill the PS3.Is this something so bad that it will hurt the software sales of the PS3 as much as hacking hurt the DC, X-Box or even PS1? And, at the risk of sparking another flamewar, piracy has never killed a console. Bad management kills consoles, piracy is a convenient scapegoat. The DC for instance was released before the PS2 and couldn't beat the hype. You can't pirate Dreamcast games if you haven't bought a dreamcast because you're waiting for the PS2.
Depending on what Sony does, it could even work out in their favor. I'm a lot more likely to buy a PS3 now, and when I do I'll buy some games for it too. That's income they wouldn't have if the encryption wasn't broken. Remember, the biggest pirates are also the biggest purchasers.

Yeah, I'll be using CFW as soon as it's available, and I still plan on purchasing plenty of games.
Hope sony doesn't fix this before Last Guardian comes out...

That's the beauty of the hack; it doesn't need a custom firmware. It can make homebrew run like any legitamite game.AppleQueso wrote:Yeah, I'll be using CFW as soon as it's available, and I still plan on purchasing plenty of games.

This is along the lines of what I was thinking they would do. Just re-sign their old software with new keys and toast everything else. This is an interesting prospect though; think I will wait and see what happens between Sony and the hacking community. Personally I would still buy the disc-based games; but would be more inclined to get free PSN games.Hatta wrote:Then they'd need to make a white list of games generated with the old keys. This is not a "monumental task". They signed every one of those games in the first place, so they should have the signatures on file. Shouldn't take much more than a properly formed SQL query to get that list.
Then they need to sign that list with the new keys, so nobody can add anything to the whitelist of games.

I probably wouldn't use it for piracy at all, personally. I'd just use it as an all encompassing media hub.
