Is/was anyone a Fan of Text-based Games?
Re: Is/was anyone a Fan of Text-based Games?
I was the one that showed SwooshBear Zork on Black Ops and I remember way back when when I played a few text-based games. Can't remember what they were called though. Those games require intense imagination lol

As Sheldon said in The Big Bang Theory when he was playing Zork, these games run on the most powerful graphics chip: the human imagination.lorryguy wrote:I was the one that showed SwooshBear Zork on Black Ops and I remember way back when when I played a few text-based games. Slightly off topic, but for those of you who like text based games, you should check out Get Lamp Documentary. A friend of mine is a huge fan of these types of games and loved the film. I found it kinda boring halfway through but it did have some interesting parts.

I just found out that the classic 1998 text adventure Anchorhead by Michael S. Gentry can now be played online.

The Zork series is on GOG (graphical version included), but you can get all the Z-Machine games as well as Interpreters for almost every computer and handheld system free here.
I played through most of Leather Goddesses of Phobos and the first Zork on my old 17Mhz computer back in the day.
A little off topic, but I really enjoyed Kingdom of Kroz, ZZT, and Nethack. I hear lots of good things about Dwarf Fortress, but haven't tried it yet. The Dwarf Fortress stories archive is really interesting considering the source material.

Cool thread, thanks for bumping it.
The original post mentions MUDs. I was a day one subscriber in both Ultimate Online and WoW but I actually became most engrossed over the five years I played the MUD Achaea. I highly recommend anyone curious about MUDs check it out for its may social features including player-run governments. The company behind it has a few other MUDs using the same engine and one I've been waiting to open for a long time now is their first sci-fi: Tears of Polaris. I expect to spend a lot of time there when it opes.
First text based game I really got hooked on was the BBS door game Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD)... good stuff.
