As a child I got scared easily, I remember back in the day people got scared much more too
Computer use was much less(maybe none?) and people were not as knowledgeable as today.
So they got scared much easier.

Today they can probably tell its a blue-screen, a large puppet, or CG, they don't get scared. Back in the day you had to scratch your head a lot to know if the things were real or not, at least you will wonder how they did it.

I can't say what is a truly scary movie, people get scared from different things, just like they find different things funny or not .
I think we must be clear on what is scary, and what is not.

1)Gross/disgust : Movie makers think they can scare you with disgusting stuff like someone eating an eye, or blowing blood out of ears. Gross but not scary . Ex...Saw

2) Disturbing : Movies that won't scare you but gives you unpleasant ideas. I am especially disturbed by rape scenes, and child abuse. Disturbing but not scary. Ex..Mystic River

3)Jump: This is the cheapest scare tactic ever , even if it works. Its the easiest. They just make it look like nothing is happening then something would jump on the screen with some loud noise. Shocking or scary? you decide ...Ex...most horror movies.

4) Mind/Psychology: These movies are the kind I consider scary but they are rare and few. They are the ones that make you think and scared of "What if's" . They would show you a story or situation that will play with your mind. Two ways to know if any certain movie falls in this category:
1- Scare effect last even after the movie is over, you will still be feeling uncomfortable hours later
2-The movie is still scary even if you told it as a story to someone you know, he doesn't need to watch it.
I guess Dracula is of this type, if you never heard of Vampires before.

in conclusion most movies are not scary, as an adult its really hard to get scared because of a movie. I just hate the "jump" tactic, that is what gets me nervous in horror movies I don't like the shock.

The best movies I consider Scary and are actually good to watch from recent times
1-1408
2-The Skeleton Key

Sorry for the long post, I just have something for Horror movies since I was a little kid

A lot of it has to do with your frame of mind and your atmosphere.

When I was about 15 years old a bunch of friends and myself watched Darkness Falls at my cabin. My cabin has a little storage shack about thirty feet away from the actual cabin itself in the middle of the bushes and there is an old TV and a couch in there. Watching scary movies in a shack in the middle of the woods late at night is terrifying and awesome at the same time. A combination of all these elements made for one hell of a night. I don't think the movie itself is that scary under normal circumstances though.

I saw (the new) Nightmare on Elm street with a bunch of friends and everyone was baked out of their minds making jokes the entire time so the movie really wasn't scary at all.

I found The Haunting in Connecticut pretty scary but I am a tad bit scared of ghosts.

I don't get too scared by movies anymore because I watch way too many. The original Pulse, however, had a couple of seens that freaked me out (not the American version). As for when I was young, Alien was scary - especially because my parents (who let me watch anything) would cover my eyes so much. It made it more unknown and freaky. Not surprisingly it is my favorite movie now! I know some people will disagree, but Paranormal Activity was kind of scary - in the jump out at you kind of way. I also thought The Descent was scary - especially when the chick is stuck in that small passageway before the monsters are even introduced.

kingmohd84, 1408 is great, I love that movie. It reminded of Silent Hill 4 The Room in some respects.

I don't know why, but Event Horizon always spooked me.

Event Horizon

Granted my brain knows they're not real so movies don't bother me in general, I thought the end of EH was horribly cheesy to the point of being almost funny. The rest of the movie was cool, but when Sam came back it just went silly to me. Great soundtrack though.

I have seen the movie once...when it was in theaters. I just remember being spooked by it at that ripe young age. Maybe if I watch it now, I will share your opinion.....or I would weep in fear like a little puppy.
