I'd say there's more than a dash of old timey serial. But yes, Star Wars is not science fiction. It's much more of a fantasy film that happens to have robots and blasters.

On a side note, it's pretty funny how George Lucas has continuously revised his story about the creation of Star Wars. As I recall from a couple of interviews from the 70's, he used to be pretty open about the fact that he just took a bunch of old adventure books, films, and serials and put them all together. His discussions are a lot more pretentious now.

What's with the lack of Caravan of Courage: An Ewok Adventure?

And the lack of the Star Wars Holiday Special upsets me.

But for the record, Empire Strikes Back is my favorite. Bounty hunters rule.

hahaha. So true. I remember renting the old trilogy a few years ago, and I checked out the bonus content. He kept saying how the "story evolved", but that it was always about a couple of twins.

Um I call bullshit on that one Mr havemyheadstucksofarupmyass, cause if it was ALWAYS a story about twins you wouldn't have promoted Luke and Leia as a couple in the original trailers.

Also Star Wars was a lot better before it became so pretentious and had infinte CGI effects cheapen the experience. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9gvqpFbRKtQ

exactly. Old movies rock cause you know they don't use CGI, so the special effects will always be more impressive cause you are thinking "this stuff is actually real, but shot with special tricks".

That's why I still think Metropolis is the movie with the greatest special effects (for its time) of all time.
