Yep, great game. My wife is incredibly resourceful at organizing quick words, and I'm not just talking two, three letter words. She pretty much pwns both sides of our family over the holidays. Bananagrams is actually surprisingly more common these days. I think my local Target even carries(d) it.

Catan is awesome. I want to get the expansions and the new revision but can't justify the price at the moment. I also play that on XBL if anybody wants to challenge me.

I also play Risk a fair amount. At one point we were playing every other monday evening at my friends pub, I really should set that going again... Thankfully I can avoid the lengthy set up process by playing on XBL now.

One year I was going to get my younger siblings some wii stuff, but wasn't sure if they had it already. So instead, I bought them Risk. They loved it. So I decided every year to instead buy them board games for Christmas/Birthdays. Mostly given them more mainstream ones (Risk, Othello, Apples to Apples, etc.). I play Carcassonne with friends, and am not above an occasional game of Clue and Stratego.

Dune, Battlelore/Memoir 44, Warhammer Quest, Pitchcar, Dominion, and the aMAZEing Labyrinth are my favorite boardgames. But my collection is around 60 now that I had to thin it out some. I am slowly getting rid of the games that I dont play anymore. I have come to really enjoy coop American games, Pandemic is quickly becoming a favorite. Though I am still down for a game of Titan or Twilight Imperium 3rd edition if time allows, and the girlfriend isnt playing.

...Dominion...

This is the game my friends and I have been enjoying the most lately. Unfortunately, we played it so much over the summer that everyone started getting bored of it, but once everyone is back for winter break, we're probably going to start playing more again, especially since we're up to 4 sets now (the original + Seaside + Intrigue + Alchemy). It really is an amazingly well designed game; the concept is so simple and elegant yet completely fresh.

Ha, this used to be one of my favorites too. Unfortunately, no one else ever liked it as much as I did, so I haven't played it much.

@Settlers of Catan: I'm going to be honest; I was a little disappointed by this game. It's most people's gateway into board gaming, but my friends and I didn't get it until we were already avid board gamers. It definitely has its strengths, but I really, really hate how resource collection is random. Of course, almost every game has an element of chance to it, but when you miss out on the most basic thing needed to play the game because of a few bad rolls, it's kinda a helpless feeling.

Anyways, other board game my friends and I have enjoyed (I'm lumping card-based games in here too):
Iron Dragon: This was our passion before Dominion, but unfortunately we played the CRAP out of this game too. Get contracts; build railroads; fulfill contracts; build more rail. It's amazingly fun, and the only real problem is the slight imbalance with the contracts - from my experience with the game, I can confidently say that planning to fulfill fur contracts in the late game is the best way to win. So, when all the players know this, it can get a little stale game after game when everyone is rushing to build rail to Kola. Still a great game, and one we often go back to.
Risk: Not much to say here; we've all played it.
Risk 2210: One of many Risk variations. Objectively, I'd say it's probably a worse game than traditional Risk, but it's a fun variation that adds a lot of new features (like nuclear fallout!) to the game and is good to play when traditional Risk gets stale.
Illuminati: Card-based game where each player chooses an Illuminati (such as the Gnomes of Zurich, the Bermuda Triangle, or the Servants of Cthulhu), and vies to fulfill some victory condition (different for each Illuminati) by taking control of other groups (like the Mafia, the Orbital Mind Control Lasers, or California). A fun and pretty easy to learn game that's also (if you couldn't have guessed by the names) quite humorous.
Emyreon Inc.: I'm not 100% sure what the name is, since google gave me no results for Emyreon Inc., but I know it's something close to that. Another card game - you each get a planet which produces resources which you can use to buy more planets, buy action cards, or corner resources (which is the ultimate goal of winning the game).

I have been thinking about getting some board games recently. I bought Bang!, a game I have always loved even if I'm pretty bad at it.

Basically, it's a western setting and the players are either the Sheriff, the Deputies, the Outlaws or the Renegade. However the only role known is that of the sheriff, so you don't know who is a friend and who isn't.

Basically, if you are the good guys you win if the Sheriff is the last standing. If you are the Outlaws you win if you kill the Sheriff and if you are the Outlaw you must be the very last one on the table, killing the Sheriff last one on one.

The mechaniscs are simple but provide quite a bit of strategy and reinforce each other. You have to balance diplomacy with power and chances of winning.

My friends and I also got back to Munchkin again, it never gets old, specially with the tons of expansions it has. You can also add your own cards so you can have the "DDR Monster" or something as fun as that.


I would love to play some Risk but you need 4 people playing it for it to be really fun. And since I can only get 3 players reliably and it's a pretty hardcore game I don't think it would be a good choice for me. I would also love to play Railroad Tycoon (Rails of the X) but I don't think my friends would like the theme of the game much.

Banagrams is great. We had it for a couple of years. I also got Appletters and Pears in Pairs. I don't recommend them at all. Pears in Pairs is too easy and is for little kids in my opinion. Appletters is not really that fun. Just stick with Banagrams, a classic.

Anyone played the Nintendo Monopoly game? I'm sure it's just Monopoly with N-characters but, is it actually neat???
