I feel like a crotchety old fart at this point. I pretty much hate every new trend these days in gaming, motion controls, "family" games, holding back content to sell to you later, pre-order "bonuses", endless sequels, rising costs of games and hardware, avatars, and the list goes on and on. This save issue is just another example of shit going downhill. My spending has gone from about 80% on new and 20% on retro to about a complete turn around of 80% on retro and 20% on new.

I wonder if there is some pressure from the hardware side (Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo) to limit the possibility that softmods will be possible.
I think some softmods for the Xbox etc. were started by tampered save files. It is the only thing that I can think of that could be motivating this lack of a sensible feature.

I don't either, but when logic fails me so much, I try to find anything other than stupidity that would justify it.

Very good point, I forgot about that.

Regarding the worth of achievements/trophies being worthless, yes there is no actual value to them but at least there's no easy way to hack the trophies on the 360 plus you're going to get banned, compared to the PS3 it's as simple as editing a file and that's it. All trophies for any game. There's no real punishment for being banned on PSN, just make a new account and change your system ID. So you actually have to work for your achievements on 360, but you just edit a file on PS3.

Just one more justification to hack the consoles. They shouldn't be giving us reasons to do that.

Okay, but some of that is far from new to the industry:

Most games used to be considered "family games". Hence Nintendo naming their first major console the "Family Computer"...

Holding back content to sell as an add-on later goes at least as far back as Sonic & Knuckles. I think some PC games were selling expansion packs before that, too.

Endless sequels have plagued the industry almost since the beginning.

Rising costs of games and hardware is relative to what you're looking at. The Wii doesn't cost much more than the traditional $200 they've always asked--adjusted for inflation it's probably cheaper. Wii games on disc are the usual $40-50--again, that's less than NES games used to cost if you adjust for inflation. WiiWare downloadable games typically cost from $5 to $20. If you're looking at the Sony or MS camps, then I guess you've got room to complain.

That just leaves motion controls, preorder bonuses, and gamer avatars. I can think of aspects of the gaming industry that are going downhill, but those don't strike me as very good examples. Motion controls have largely been left optional or unintrusive. Avatars could hardly be argued to do any damage, as they can usually just be ignored.

As for the topic at hand... well just you try to get your NES to copy your Zelda saves to another cartridge and tell me this is a new issue ;)
