Re: Genesis Possible Loose Video Connection
Genny 3's rock for just playing Genesis games sans CD or 32X. They also feature the much better CXA1116 encoder as well for much sharper and colorful video.
My Consoles:
Genesis - Nomad - SegaCD - GameGear - Sega Saturn - Dreamcast - NES - SNES - N64 - Gamecube - Wii - Playstation - PSone & LCD - PS2 - PS3 - Xbox - 3DS

Re: Genesis Possible Loose Video Connection
There's nothing wrong with the early Model 2's. Their sound quality is on par with that of the Model 1's ( minus the muffle the Model 1's have). The video quality is far superior due to the CXA1645 as well. I have multiple Model 2's and they are all the early full PCB models which still retain the characteristics of the original Model 1. I've yet to come across a Model 2 in person that has the shitty audio. Really.
Also compared to the Model 2's with an svideo mod. The Model 3's dont look as good. While this does require a mod on the Model 2 part... At least the Model 2 has stereo out.

True, but he seems quite content with the model 3 even it if has mono sound. The majority of model 2s I ran into were crappy ones. The only good ones I have are the 3/4 motherboard versions. All of the full ones I have has crappy audio.

Actually none of the Model 2's have a 1645 until the last 3/4 revisions and all of them have some form of defect in the audio circuit (even the 3/4's suffer from a slight muffle on the high end). I've taken apart dozens of them with the same result every time.jeffro11 wrote:There's nothing wrong with the early Model 2's. Modding a Model 1 or 2 for S-Video means inevitable jailbars in the picture produced by amping the circuit outside of the chip itself, this is not present on the 3/4 motherboard Model 2 or the Model 3 both of which have the CXA1645.
What you use to hear or view your console makes a world of difference: RF, Composite, S-Video, RGB, CRT or LCD/Plasma, TV Speakers or a separate Amp or Home Theater Receiver. The farther up the chain you go the more and more you'll notice all the little imperfections to where they can become an incredible nuisance.

Re: Genesis Possible Loose Video Connection
Yeah I'd be fine with a Model 3 myself if I got another Genesis. And I wouldn't mind the mono sound. Reason being, I've got a Model 1 already. If I really want to play with Stereo, I'll use my Model 1. I've heard both stereo and mono on my Model 1 and honestly I don't hear THAT big of a difference other than that sound is more crisp on stereo. Also, just the novelty factor. I've never actually seen a Model 3 in person and its so tiny and sleek, and much less of a hassle if I wanted to carry it with me somewhere like a friend's house or maybe another room of my house.
Going through deleting inactive accounts of mine as a security precaution. No hard feelings, but admins, if it is possible to delete this account, please do so. Thanks in advance!

That's a good trade off. The portability and novelty factor.
Id also like to show you guys a sound bit from Sonic 2 I just record on my Genesis Model 2. It's a later model, VA2.3. Stamped 14 APR 1996. This thing has some pretty great sound. PSG volume is perfect and not quiet at all. So not ALL Model 2's "sound like crap" This one has the real YM2612, and the CXA1645M.

As you can hear it sounds... Great. Very good depth, just as you'd expect from a Model 1 with good sound.

Re: Genesis Possible Loose Video Connection
True. Not all model 2s are bad though the good ones are harder to come by since they were released later on in the Genesis' lifespan. All models 2s (starting with the last line of model 1s which had a VA7 motherboard with poor sound circuitry being the same as the first model 2s) had poor sound circuitry until the later ones. Note that yours is from 96 so you've got a good one.
