Somewhat sobering article about a disillusioned collector

it felt a little melodramatic. Like about skipping the prom and all that. It sounds more like the dude isn't upset about collecting, but rather time wasted and experiences missed. Don't get me wrong, I love collecting and playing and all that, but when my wife said she wanted to watch the basketball game with me, I did just that. Y'know?

Exactly. I fill pretty much every spare hour playing video games. I fell in love with them as a child, and I continue to delight in what they give me. But I can't remember the last time I've skipped out on doing something with others in favor of video games. Hell, the closest I come is sometimes I take a random day of work to play video games, and even then I need to do that just to avoid losing vacation days. In his case it's pretty clear he was not prioritizing his life properly.

That's basically the definition of an addiction--you do it even to the detriment of your relationships, your job, your health, your finances, etc.

my avg day, work 10 hours, eat, game, sleep. Works out pretty good. Oh yeah, some self control to do other things that must be done.

It is up to each person to control themselves. This article only makes game collectors look bad as people will generalize that we are all like this.

This man has issues, gaming has nothing to do with it. I mean, he skipped school. That's a huge problem no matter what you do with your time.

I think that he should be tackling the sickness instead of the symptoms.

I've thought about getting rid of the TV's but I like having access to news, history channel, and discovery. I just wish it was feasible to have an 'ala carte' option where you only pay for the channels you watch.

Same thing with gaming. Sometimes I get depressed because I spend real money on my game collection, sometimes expanding it to the point where there are more games than I'll ever have time to play. You can sell things to recoup some of the lost money, but I still feel like I spend too much for what amounts to a shelf decorator by the time I get it out the door.

News- most news channels have their news online, as do the papers. Alternative, newspaper.

History Channel- pretty much entirely WWII stuff.

Discovery- pretty much all Mythbusters now.

When you say you don't watch tv, do you actually mean you don't watch any movies, tv shows, news, or documentaries?

Or do you mean you just don't open the tv and watch whats on?

because if you watch nothing, thats pretty impressive...
if you buy and watch your own shows, thats basically like watching tv except you choose what to watch. I am not sure if it counts as NOT watching TV...its more like watching what you want from TV.
