hating the games everyone loves

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

ummm... no, Kubrick directed "Eyes Wide Shut" and then Spielberg came in and finished it because Kubrick died.

A.I. was a script Kubrick had written and was lying around. Kubrick's wife and Spielberg got together to get it made... all directed by Spielberg.

Kubrick licensed a sci-fi short story that he wanted to adapt to a movie. He wanted a softer more emotional tone so he wanted his friend Spielberg to direct it. Spielberg told Kubrick he should direct it himself and it would be fine. Then Kubrick died and Spielberg decided to finish the movie after all.

Yes, I am one of those geeks who actually watches the bonus features on the DVDs he buys. :)

I really thinks that The Sims is among a game that sucks, for reasons already told by you guys. I naturally tend to dislike many lan-house kind of games these days too.

And, of course, Mr. Chin is not very fun...

This thread is epic. Total insanity.

I think Halo and FFVII get slammed more because of political reasons than anything else. People hated FFVII because it had FMV and was a jolting change from previous titles. Also, they felt Nintendo was shafted. Halo falls into the same boat because there were so many people determined to hate the Xbox and the game was overhyped. The original Xbox fat controller didn't help. I really enjoyed the single player of Halo on the PC. The smooth gameplay, quirky story, hilarious enemies, and catchy music made it memorable. I guess I'm biased since I was a big fan of Pathways Into Darkness and Marathon.

I admit, I haven't give Halo enough of a chance. Again, I don't "hate" it. I just played it at a friends house and from the moments I spent with it, I wasn't impressed too much. Although I only played multiplayer.

it's a fun game. it's not as "legendary" (no pun intended) as everyone says it is but it's a solid FPS if you are into that sort of thing, which i am. i think the production of it is what sets it apart. the huge, open areas, and the way the music ties into the action are two things that always stood out to me about halo.

plus the pistol owns.

Most people only get Halo for the multiplayer, but the way I see it, UT2004 is superior to it in every single way except for match making. From music, to maps, to vehicles, to weapons, to gameplay modes, to sheer amount of content, UT2004 wins. And so far, I've invited over 4 hardcore Halo fans to my place, and all 4 times they leave my place saying "Oh my god I need to get a good PC!" It's just a superior product.

Halo is the Xbox's Mario franchise. Granted it may not be as wonderful to PC gamers who were weaned on your "WASD" movement and mouse looking (I too am guilty of buying a keyboard and mouse for Dreamcast to tear shit up on Quake III's online mode back in its' hayday), it's most likely the best console FPS series to date.

Microsoft will ride it's already established success (which is obviously a good move to keep the beasty corporation in a market that they don't have a strangle-hold on) and continue to pump out Halos. I even read in a EGM rumor mill that it may very well be possible that there will release a Halo sequel and a Gears of War sequel every alternating year because of both of their die hard followings and huge cash potential.

They didn't re-invent the FPS wheel, but they added tires and a suspension to it and made for a very cozy experience for console gamers. If they keep it up, it will only get better.

Well, I've playing FPSs on consoles more than the PC, so that's not my issue. But most of my playing of the genre has been UT on the Dreamcast and Timesplitters 2 on the Cube. Timesplitters had some of the most ideal controls for a console FPS IMO, but is significantly different than Halo.
