Re: Don't share that secret!
I can remember back when Mortal Kombat came out on Sega Genesis, my uncle bought it at a KB Toys, I think it was. The guy at the store gave him a card that said "A,B,A,C,A,B,B" My uncle kept it in his wallet.
For me, everything was word of mouth back in those days. I remember vividly finally doing Raiden's fatality. Oh man, was I a happy kid that day hahaha

Re: Don't share that secret!
I found a trick to skip to the next level in Gridrunner II on C64 back in the day. A couple of quick google searches seem to indicate that it is a well kept secret.Veno wrote:For those of you from back in the day, how did you find out these secrets?

Re: Don't share that secret!
The net existed back when MK was hot, just not as accessible as it is today. I remember a local 7-11 had MK, and one of the clerks had printed up all the movesets and fatality codes and tried to sell them on the side. I told him no thanks, and went to the library the next day and found them myself. Probably took a bit longer than it would today, for sure. There was no internet back then to make a quick "ALL MORTAL KOMBAT CHEATS" search and get everything from A to Z, maybe even some stuff the developer didn't know about !

It was all word of mouth for me and my friends. The crazy thing was you could own a game for a year and then find something out or unlock an extra level you had no clue existed.
Slightly off topic

I love them and they actually push me to complete games. I have a big problem with older games especially RPGs that I never finish them becoming side tracked. Unlocking that Chieve helps me through those tough times in games where I would usually say F This..

Re: Don't share that secret!
this is all interesting
looking to hear more about hiding game secrets,
I still remember a magazine called "tips and tricks" it was like the holly grail , if you had this magazine you will be a game's master.
game cheats and secrets were a huge plus back then, I wonder why it isn't used more often now.
Now we have a lot of glitches

Because games let you save your progress every 15 seconds, there isn't much need to have cheat codes anymore, although, codes do of course still exist.
A lot of those old games are pretty hard and having a code for "super easy" or 999 lives, or god mode was the only way for some people to beat them.

Re: Don't share that secret!
I remember most people in the arcades new the fatalities for Mortal Kombat games, but only the elite people knew how to do babalities and friendship finishers, and they kept that secret for a pretty long time. I remember the first time someone did a friendshsip to me and Johnny Cage gave me his autographed picture. I was like WTF!? I was pissed at the insult, but couldn't stop laughing either. I wanted to know how to do it, but the guy wasn't about to tell me.

Re: Don't share that secret!
It seems that fighting games, particularly, were always at the fore-front with word-of-mouth knowledge and secrets.
Who the hell would figure out how to fight Noob Saibot in MKII w/out somebody in the know back in the 90's??
And let's not forget EGM's infamous 'Sheng Long' trick!
