I just tried to play this game today for the first time (serious play - not just fooling around) and I also got real frustrated trying to find the Casio... I also spent a lot of time to figure out that you needed to carry the green key to unlock stage 2.

Anyway, I am liking this game but the controls are hard to get used to. I am not really a fan of Sonic in 3D.

*note: for the record I am not a fan of 3D games in general. The only 3D game that I 100% didn't mind the control was Super Mario Galaxy.
That's interesting, I had the exact same problems. I made it to stage 6 before a scratch on my disc killed it for me. Restarting several times didn't work. Was fun after the initial upset of getting lost in a hub world. Seriously, no need for that tedium.

SA1 vs SA2 parallels STH1 vs STH2 for me. In both instances, the second game has brighter, bolder, and generally better graphics at the slight expense of looking a little bit harsher on the eyes due so some extreme contrast. In both cases, the second game has much faster gameplay and flashier gimmicks. Unfortunately, in both cases, the second game tends to be a lot buggier. Moreover, the faster gameplay often comes at the expense of straighter, less interesting paths through the levels.

I think overall, SA2 would be a lot more fun for me, if not for the glitches, the bad camera, and some of the later Knuckles/Rouge stages. I love running through the jungle levels, but otherwise, SA1 has held up a lot better for me. I can't think of any SA2 levels for Sonic or Shadow that are as interesting to careen through as any of the Sonic stages from SA1 (minus Sky Deck, I guess). Yeah, the SA1 "adventure field" was annoying to figure out, but once you know where everything is, it stays there. The Knuckles/Rouge stages are just as annoying to me, plus the hidden items move around between replays, AND in the later levels there's a time limit. I'll take the adventure field instead, thanks.

That said, I love both games and wouldn't give up either.

I somewhat enjoyed the earlier ones, but there's always that nagging feeling that I bought this game for the Sonic experience, and I'm getting very little of it. Where it really irked me was when they put a time limit on it later on.

I liked them on the first Sonic Adventure, but hated them on the second one.

That said, I also echo flamethrower's sentiments that I felt annoyed that I had paid for a Sonic experience, but was getting very little of it.

I hate you guys right now. I went against my better judgment and listened to you.
I thought, perhaps I was wrong. Sonic Adventure might have been kind of good. It's only cause I played the second one first, that I thought it wasn't that good. Same thing with the Mega Drive games. Sonic 1 IS good, just not as good as Sonic 2 or S&K (but better than sonic 3).

So I went and gave Sega another 8€ and bought the game on PSN. I hate you guys. The game is an unplayable mess. Horrible camera, the stages are empty, you just hold up on the control stick and watch sonic run.

Sooooooo boring. Sorry, I can't be polite about this, but Sonic Adventure 2 is just a muuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better game, and it actually kind of stands the test of time. SA on the other hand? IS TOTAL SHIT.

Just think what I could do with that 8€ that I will never be able to do now.....

How far did you play? The earlier levels are clearly designed for someone who might be new to 3D platforming games, and are easy enough for my mostly-non-gaming girlfriend to get through. It gets a little more interesting at Speed Highway and Red Mountain (which I find fun but still really easy) and really picks up at Sky Deck, which is very reminiscent of the Flying Battery Zone. That's where my girlfriend gave up. Lost World and Final Egg were a lot of fun. Mind you, I had fun with the first three levels, but they're clearly meant for beginners and casual gamers.

As for complaining about poor camera in SA1 but liking SA2, I have no idea what to say. I had very few problems with the SA1 camera, while SA2's camera is notoriously bad.

clearly this part of the discussion will not get us anywhere so let's let it be.

Also another thing, Mario 64 and Mario Sunshine had fun hub worlds to explore. SA hub world is a pain.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure that's why they ditched it.

You sir, are a man after my own heart. I'm always surprised by just how much love this game still gets, when it truly doesnt seem any better than any of the other awful 3D sonic games.
