I always think it's very easy to scoff at the idea that muslims want to take over the world, when you live in an area with very few muslim people.MrEco wrote:Probably for the people getting worked up. I don't know where you live, but if you lived somewhere in England for example with very high immigration levels you might be more concerned.
On another note, I always find it a curious contradiction that liberals and progressive thinkers tend to sympathise with muslims, when in general muslim society is very conservative and pretty much as un-liberal as possible.
Anyway, in before I get called a racist. I should probably keep out of these political discussions but I just can't help myself.

It's still easy to scoff at the idea that they're "taking over the world". Spreading out? Sure, but the rantings and ramblings you see seem to almost outright imply that every time you turn around one of your friends or neighbors has suddenly converted to Islam. Obviously that's not the case.Incognito D wrote:I always think it's very easy to scoff at the idea that muslims want to take over the world, when you live in an area with very few muslim people.

As for this:
I think the liberal response would be something along the lines of how we should treat others equally regardless of whether we agree with their society or ideals. On another note, I always find it a curious contradiction that liberals and progressive thinkers tend to sympathise with muslims, when in general muslim society is very conservative and pretty much as un-liberal as possible.
Re: I'm sorry but this is hilarious
I find it curious how conservatives hate fundamentalist muslims when they're pretty much the same phenomenon in different countries. Sharia is to Afghanistan what "Family Values" is to America. It seems like they lack the self awareness to realize that their motivations are exactly the same, and they're both wrong for the very same reasons. The differences are only of degree, not of substance.Incognito D wrote: On another note, I always find it a curious contradiction that liberals and progressive thinkers tend to sympathise with muslims, when in general muslim society is very conservative and pretty much as un-liberal as possible.

I find it curious that someone could find people hating people different from them to be curious.Hatta wrote: I find it curious how conservatives hate fundamentalist muslims when they're pretty much the same phenomenon in different countries.

I find it curious how 'curious' starts to not seem like a real word anymore when you use it enough.
Re: I'm sorry but this is hilarious
That's kind of my point. They're not so different after all. Someone like James Dobson or Boyd Packer has a lot more in common with the Taliban than they do normal people who just want to live their lives and mind their own business.Limewater wrote: I find it curious that someone could find people hating people different from them to be curious.

I've never heard of Boyd Packer, but I think you're being pretty hard on James Dobson.Hatta wrote:That's kind of my point. They're not so different after all. I got your original point, but I think you're looking at things pretty narrowly in your claim that the differences between American religious conservatives and the Sharia advocates in Afghanistan are of degree and not substance. Sure, they might have some commonalities in the parts that are important to you, but in the areas that are important to the people you're talking about, they are very different.
And besides, you're missing the most important difference. The folks in Afghanistan are brown and dress funny and live on the wrong side of the planet.
From my experience, wanting to just live one's own life and mind one's own business is not a characteristic of "normal people".normal people who just want to live their lives and mind their own business.

I find that funny because I live near Dearborn, which has one of the highest muslim populations in the U.S... And I don't feel concerned at all.. Most of them are just people like you and me..Incognito D wrote:
