What draws you to retro gaming online communities?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

It might be hard to get this answer....but I'd be even more interested to know what has driven people away from online retro communities. I'd really be curious to hear from people who have reasons as to why they rarely if ever post here anymore, but I'd also like to hear from others who may have left sites that share the same interests we do here...
I came to this forum because of all the knowledge thru all the great posts I read. A wealth of information as well as great reads due to true love of video games both new and especially old.

As far as why there are less posts and maybe reads?
I get bored when I see articles clogging the front page such as:

"What should I play next?"
"Tell me how to spend my money"
"The top (take your pick)"

Everyone enjoys a certain topic but come on, lets get some "meat and potatoes" into the posts.

Seeing other people's rooms gives you lots of ideas on how to set up yours. It's also intersting to know what games a poster likes, because if he has similar tastes to you, finding a cool new game is easier.

I trust posters here more than any mainstream game critic, they have more knowledge of the field, for starters and aren't afraid of saying that a "classic" is not worth getting.

In the end the main reason I'm here is because everyone is nice and talks about interesting topics not about "what is better". Everyone also shows interest in every console and they don't limit themselves to a single game or system.

I go to retro gaming forums to talk about politics, religion, and mosques. Why else?

I think this is why Racketboy is great, the banter with real heart of other topics at times.

Originally the "hidden gems" etc articles drew me here as I did play a lot of games on all systems growing up, there are tons more I haven't played.
And to echo others, other game sites are primarily about new games. While I enjoy and play new games a lot, there just is a charm associated with pixel-based games and other things (they don't make'm like they used to).

i like finding out about new things that interest me. i also like helping other people with similar interests find out about the things that i love. when i can make a post on a forum about an awesome game that i love, and someone else ends up loving it as much as i do, i feel a connection that i don't get a lot of other places. that's why sites like this are appealing to me.

I only really frequent this one retro community(though I read articles on the hardcoregaming 101 site too). I like a couple things about this community:

1. People here are actually educated about gaming. That doesn't apply to 90% of the people who write for mainstream video game sites(and I'm probably being kind with that number). That's the first thing I noticed about this site and it's what made me become a member and stick around
2. People here are civil. I've disagreed with people here and still maintained civil, respectful conversation
3. People here actually have shit to talk about. Go to a gamefaqs forum and see the same damn things being talked about every day, the same damn flame wars, the same dumb joke topics, the same opinions, etc. etc. Other game forums are the equivalent of a broken record
4. Amazing knowledge here about technical things and other lesser known topics like obscure titles. Lots of very useful knowledge here that you might have a hard time finding through google searching(given how dumb most of the internet community seems to be)
5. I just love the fact that you can talk about ANY game here, no matter how far behind you are compared to the rest of the gaming community and SOMEONE will talk about it with you. You don't need to "keep up with the joneses" around here

All of the feedback posted has been great! Thanks a lot for giving your insight everybody. This is the first forum I have joined. I can admit I'm not much of a forum person, but maybe I just need to find my groove. I really enjoy the site though.
